I bought a Sony DSC V1 open item for $210. I just wanted to know what should I check for to make sure it is not defective ? I have 2 weeks to check it , if its not good I will return it.
Thank you
V

I got it from Local Sears.

One more question - I tried the camera, picture quality is excellent but when I transfer the TIFF images to my computer it transfers 2 images one is tif and other is jpg , is that normal?
Thanks
V

Thank you for your prompt help.

Is there any way on DSC V1 to turn on the 'Red Eye Reduction' while in camera mode , without going to the set up mode?

Just bought a V1 from Sears for $ 149.00, was a return, owner thought it too complicated, just graduate from MVC FD95 (dark ages), will use the DV1 as temporary till decision on newer camera. This little camera really takes great pics.

V1 is one of the most powerful camera sony introduced with excellent picture quality. In the range of that size I would say V1 is unbeatable. Yes battery life is poor, but if you have spare battery you willl love taking pictures with V1. Only V1 users know how excellent camera is that.

Till date I am using my V1. Even today I went for a 4 hour session with the same camera. Its small wasy to carry, reliable and produces crisp pictures.

I bought V1 in May 2004 at 414.10 dollars. The lens and accessories added in total I have invested 900 dollars on my camera. Now you can get D70 wtih 17-80mm lens at 875 dollars. Just think. Thats the reason I am not going for D70 now. Let digital photo technology get more mature and stabalized.

I bet you will love using V1.

Bye for now

$149?!? Wow- I should go check my local Sears' stores! Even if you find a smaller, faster cam, I would keep the V1 :-)

So far I am happy with the camera. I am going to purchase a non-OEM battery to make sure that I don’t run out of power. Also I can hear motor sound while zooming in and out, I guess that normal, let me know your opinion. I looked at Canon A95, which makes a lot bigger motor noise while zooming in and out also its body do not look that durable while DSC V1 body looks sturdy and durable. LCD screen is small but very clear and bright enough to see in sunlight. I haven’t tried manual functions yet but one by one I will get to them. It will be great if you guys can tell me what should I look for in it to make sure there is no defect in it since it is an open item.
Thanks
V

The slight noise is totally normal while zooming. As for the other stuff, I would just take a bunch of pictures and print them/view them. Most likely, the person simply returned it b/c it was "too big" or "they didn't like the position of the flash" etc. I bought a couple of extra batteries on eBay that worked great. They're cheap so I would buy 1 or even 2 as the battery life is the one complaint users have about the V1. Most of all, enjoy your awesome camera! And the awesome deal you got for it!

I too have noticed have noticed the short battery life. Were the batteries you bought from Ebay from Sony or Non-OEM?

I bought a battery from a seller on ebay at 40$ (charger included) but it doesn't compare to the original NP-FC11, not even close. Although it's rated 1000mAh (vs 780mAh FC11) it shows 66 minutes remaining when fully loaded and suddenly drops from 40 minutes to 0...so I guess it has about half the capacity of the sony battery. I think I'll stick with sony's from now on.

Oh, and V1 is a great piece of equipment. I've been using it for over a year and I love it :-)

or old. My cheapy gave me over 100 min. the first year, each charge. They do eventually charge less and less over time.

Keep checking specials on Amazon too for the original battery. I just use my cheapy battery for back up. The dual charger is nice, and I found on ebay a car charger which comes in handy.

Take alot of photos, you will most likely not find a defect. In fact, I've never heard of one on the V1. Its a tank!

Try using a slightly higher shutter speed with active kids shots. Better clarity. great in low light, hold it steady. Back off macro at least 9 inches from target, and try your zoom for some close ups.

It rocks, and I'm sure keeping mine! The infrared photos are fun too!

There are so many possibilities with this camera. Its a little slower on start up and focus than the new ones, but it rocks!

I saw one on ebay for $12.50 including shipping. The seller feedback seems nice too. He offers replacement/refund policy in case it gives you problem within one year. The battery rating is 850 mAH. Seems like a good deal.
thanks

They were non -OEM that I bought off of ebay from seller "npetrov"...they worked Great !!! My tip is to not buy the cheapest non-OEM and look for a warranty. And of course, a reliable seller. You should be fine if you followed that route...
