Canon...Wake Up...you are down and the

Unfortunately several of your problems come from you expecting an SLR to act like a P&S. The P&S's small sensor allows for a extreme DOF where as the SLR with a much larger sensor with a lens opened up produces a very shallow DOF - instantly you feel that the camera is faulty due to OOF problems. Stop down your lens and use the Depth of Field preview to see if this helps.

Most people like over exposed pictures so the D-Rebel looks under exposed. If you want to continue overexposing the picture install either hack and enjoy

the discution is not what Nikon offers, but the offert itself...I don't care and I don't know what nikon have and have fix with this...but the fact that are doing that are praise-worthy. So, Nikon consumer, who invest in that gear, more or less - no matter, are feeling that Nikon don't go away and forgot about them... That's what I ask from Canon...we invest in a very nice and fine dSLR camera...which have some more good things to offer us...why a hack can do that and not an official software update...

Canon is still #1 in DSLR market share, and number #1 or #2 in
overall market (including P&S). Nikon is #2 in DSLR and #5 in
overall market.
all those numbers becouse of us, the customers...
Recent news from DPReview showed that Canon sales, market share and
profit is still increasing. Canon is #2 in number of patent (#1 is
IBM).
we still consider better over other brands...
Nikon D70s is not an upgrade from D70. D70s is just a refreshment
with some modification. It could be better, but not special or
outstanding compared to D70.

same as 350xt...but along D70s, they relesed an update for the D70 user...to make them more happy with they'r gear..
I think it is a marketing gimmick by Nikon. Nikon cannot launch an
upgrade, as Nikon depends on 3rd party to make the component (like
the CCD is made by SONY). So they launch D70s, by changing some
specification of D70.

My Dad always told me “You get what you pay for.” And in this case
I bought a 300D and it’s a darn good camera.
agree with you...
I don’t see why a manufacturer of anything should be expected to
give you any upgrades for free. It’s not good business; it cuts
into future earnings and company viability. And lets face it;
Canon, like any other company is in the business first, to make
money, no matter what mission statement they claim.
the production has stop now...so they can sell the 350xt and make the older customer happy...
I deal with big CNC machine companies all the time who have
features already in their equipment that only require the change of
a computer bit. This strategy makes their machines cheaper to
develop, manufacture, and sell. Upside for me? Less cost, just like
300D. To get features on these machines I have to pay $3000.00 to
$5000.00 USD each if I want them. I can’t see Rebel users (cheap
lot that we are) paying enough for these additional features to
make it worth it for Canon to do.
seems like alike...but is not the same story...
Cornel4web, you got what you paid for, and it is still a good
camera for the price! Don’t let new features on other cameras make
you envious and ruin your joy.
I don't...but...

If one isn't happy with the features, don't buy the camera, or sell it and buy a different body. Simple as that. Funny though, that you think Canon would be foolish enough to release an official firmware that includes the features from The Hack. Very funny indeed. Canon is in the business of making money, not giving handouts.

the production has stop now...so they can sell the 350xt and make
the older customer happy...
Would I like upgrades to my 300D? You bet! I would even be willing to pay a nominal fee, much cheaper for me! But for any company, our happiness must pay them, the maximum amount of dividends, and you would be hard pressed to prove sales based on freebies. My guess is that even if they sold firmware updates, it would cut into sales of either the 350D or 20D whatever their strategy.

You might say that you will not buy another DSLR soon, and truly believe it, but the seed of desire (marketing) has already been planted. And if you do, Canon is betting you will purchase another one of theirs. After all who wants to go out and repurchase all their glass because they didn't get a firmware upgrade?

If you're dissatisfied with what you've bought and think Nikon would have suited you better, then you've only yourself to blame for having spent so much money before carrying out research.

I love my 300D which, although not the most technically advanced camera, does everything I need it to do.

It's exactly the same as Canon did about a year ago with a new firmware release for the 300D. A little tweak or two, the odd bug fix but nothing dramatic.

however as i stated in my last thread production of the 300D is finished production has ended..

but then again they might come out with a 300Ds with all the features

i cant imagine the next 350d XT will get any smaller..they have come up

with a new SLR or rehashed.and if i know Canon to play with the johnses

they will probably bring out something in August PMA.

It is true that they were a 'large' (few 100... 1000?) number of complaints regarding the Rebel.

In the great scheme of statistics, can anyone tell, with some certainty, the real percentage of complaints compared to the million + sold? (1000 of 1000000 is pretty small).

I had to have my rebel repaired. It was fast, well done and the price was right: $0... I even forgot to remove th h...ck... and I got my camear back with it.

If the people who do not complain were as vocal in their praise... but they were... the XT is back ordered in some part of the world. Why would any one buy from Canon, unless the ratio price/quality meet their expectations? Why is it that Nikon (or Fuji/Sigma) is not capable to even match Canon's success? Why do we hear of so many converts and when looking at any major events see all these white lenses?

Responding to these questions will go a long way in understanding that the 300, the 20D or the 350 are all great cameras... now and for the foreseeable future. Thanks to Canon which has brought the first mass market DSLR! All of them are flawed in some ways. the 20D is not 12 megs, for example... what a shame, but it is a bargain 8 mpix!

As a D70 owner, I do notice an improvement in dynamic focus
tracking after the fw upgrade ( I get a lot more hits instead
of misses now ).... and unlike the, 300D there are
no locked features left to be unlocked.....

it's all about the gesture dude, all about the gesture. The 300D
fiasco will leave a sour taste in a lot of ppls mouths for a
long tiime to come still and Canon really shot themselves
in the foot on that one imo ( to think some dude in Russia
had to crack the 300D is beyond laughable ) Canon should up
the ante right NOW and make all those LOCKED features available
to 300D owners right NOW if they care anything about their
customer base.

Even with your investment in EF-mount lenses?

Even the OP doesn't seem angry enough to sell his Rebel and buy a D70. For how much Canon is apparently "abandoning" their loyal customers, they sure don't seem to be losing any of them.

I would like to see two minor improvements:

1) ISO changeable without pressing SET
Aready here: press ISO, dial and shoot. No need for set.
2) ISO visible in viewfinder where shutter speed is when changeing it
I'll up the ante: I want ISO visible in the viewfinder all the time. However, that means hardware and firmware changes, so no chance. Why the heck no prosumer canon has ISO in the viewfinder?

A month ago, a friend wanted to see the camera just for a minute. Got it back, removed the polarizer... and saw LOVELY sunset outside. Went there, looked through the viewfinder, reseted EC to 0 (damn guy set it to +2), and shot. All nice. The wonderfull light stayed there for about 30 secs.

Next day, when looking at my sunsets, noticed a somewhat grainy image. Of course, iso was set to 3200!!! Kicked the friend, cursed at Canon. Images unsavable - lots of foliage and lots of noise.

I should have noticed the high shutter speed... but I was shooting with a polarizer before, and the light was changing fast and I have just stopped down the lens, and I have just reset the EC. And brain was in awe mode at the sunset. WHY NO ISO IN THE VIEWFINDER?

I can live with the other cripplings but those would just be UI
improvements that wouldn't take anything away from the pro models

She would have blasted this major troll out of the water?
I doubt it very much - Daniella is actually quite sensible. It is pathetic that you have to label this questioner as a troll. Some people seem to spend all their time looking for 'trolls' under the bed. I suppose thats better than suspecting anyone with an alternative view to be a Communist which used to be the fashion !

I feel that Canon made a big mistake by crippling the 300D & although many have out up with its limitations - it still leaves a bad taste in the mouths of others.

Canon could redeem themselves by making this gesture & set the record straight & the gratitude that many would feel would cost them next to nothing. Why so many users feel that they have to defend Canon on this particular issue is totally beyond my understanding - are they shareholders or even, please forbid, closet Canon employees ?

Thank you for the correction.

Even if D70 CCD is made by Sanyo, still Canon is not down because of a firmmware released by Nikon.

We would all be better off if we didn't jump in on these threads and keep these old, tired subjects alive. The people who keep bringing this stuff up are immature and unrealistic and nothing any of us say is going to change their little minds or Canon's. Its liike arguing with a grade schooler. The next time this thread starts, let's all just boycott it.

By the way, i bought a 300D because it had the same sensor as the 10D for less money. The light weight was a plus too for backpacking trips. I shoot mostly landscapes so I don't need the "disabled" features. I knew all that going in and I enjoy the fact that I can take such great pictures for less money than a 10D. I spent other money on good lenses and other things i needed like an Epson 4000 printer. I make large (15x23) saleable prints from my 300D because i make good exposures and have learned to use C1 and Photoshop. The 300D is a great camera for the money. Of course, I'm mostly interested in image quality, not disabled features. Personally, I'm waiting for another "diumbed down" camera with 12 megapixels or so.

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to post my 300D pix yet on the web. The ones on the site below were done with a Sony F717. It was capable of a lot too. Sold a lot of pictures from it. The camera is just a tool and the challenge is to learn to get the most out of it. However nice the Sony pictures are, the 300D blows them away.

Stop whining and learn your eqipment. Most of the whiners here don't need the features they cry about or wouldn't know how to use them if they had them. And yes, get a Nikon and get out of this forum- your "concern" for Canon is deeply touching. Grow up.
Cheers,
