I was trying my new S85 with a tripod shooting some stills indoors.

I've been using the 10 second timer. Why does it show me a shaking hand icon before it shoots the pic? It's firmly on the tripod.
Thanks,
JP

The icon is not a shakey hand detector, it is a warning feature. It is there to warn you that the camera is susceptible to shake, not that it is in fact being shook.

Thanks Ted,

Why does it show the warning sometimes on the tripod, and then othertimes no icon? Is it more likely to come on if the camera is tilted?

It probably only comes on for slower shutter speeds where hand shake becomes a factor. I don't think there's an actual sensor.

Hi JP,

I am not Ted but if you don't mind i try to answer your question. The

S85 firmware is " intelligent", but of course it can't recognize if you are using a tripod or not.

This warning message is probably derivated from the following rule:

In a given lightening situation your shots (when handhold) can be blurred,
if the shutter time will get slower than the reciprocal of the focal length.

If you are using a tripod, you are always on the secure side.

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Andreas

My camera doesn't have that icon but it definitely has to do with shutter speed plus the zoom may be a factor.

I'm pretty sure the flashing hand is specifically/only low light. The manual says, for the S75, "Light amount warning indicator," on page 94.

This seems to have been covered in the previous thread, but just in case...
Thanks all
I was in a low light situation so my shutter time was pretty slow.

Silly man! read your manual.

I have seen it come on only when the exposure is 1/40th sec or slower. I have experimented and never seen it come on at 1/50th sec or faster.

Interesting insight, Mike L, I'll have to check it out.

Kind regards.
