Which of these is best for the fz20 and where is the best place to buy.

I need a 1.5 to get closer to birds. I have tried this site http://www.2filter.com/kenko/Kenkodigital.html for raynox (Raynox DCR 1540 PRO) but they do not seem to ever have the item in stock although they advertise it as available and give the best price when you order they always say two weeks. Has anyone dealt with them before

I purchased mine from the filter connection and service was great - but that was 18 months ago. I'm using it with the FZ5 now (originally w/ Minolta 7i) and I will say that getting accurate auto-focus has been much tougher than w/ Minolta. It could be that it was much closer to the front lens of the Minolta.

You are probably right. I do have the Raynox 55 > 52 adaptor which is extremely thin, but I'm still limited by the number of threads on the Pana adaptor. I will probably buy another Pana adaptor and trim it and leave it attached to the Raynox. That will give me a quick twist to connect it.

Do you know (not think) what the closeness of the prime lens and tele affect? For example: ability to focus, crispness on shot (within the limits of the combo), etc?

I do get some very sharp pics, but think that the spot focus gets a bit dispersed at long distances (esprcially between the branches).
These samples (taken on my Minolta 7i) show what the Raynox 1540 is capable of:

I bought the Cannon TL55 1.4 tele because it is smaller and lighter. It seemed the others weighed as much or more than the camera and the tl55 had good reviews on here. I'm happy with it. Got it from adorama in 6 days after ordering it. Bought a pemerall 55mm adaptor for it too.

Here is one of the first ones I took. I'm in my back yard shooting towards the front, across the street at a garage across the alley of the next block:

Here is a moon shot I took last night at full digital zoom with the tl55 attached. No cropping or pp, accept resizing for this post, straight from the camera, hand held:

What is the thickness of the "extremely thin" raynox ring?
I will probably buy another Pana adaptor and

I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my oly bmacro for quick connect.

I dont know. I've seen conflicting results from different tests depending on the distance to the subject. The general trend of the data seems to indicate closer distance to subject benefits (crispness of shot) from closer lens spacing. I dont have the 1540. I'd like to try it but I already have a half dozen teles. Something tells me I've got to stop.

I have the fz1v2 and the fz5 and the spot focus on the fz5 is not as consistently accurate in comparison to the fz1. The use of a tele converter seems to result in even less consistent accuracy.
These samples (taken on my Minolta 7i) show what the Raynox 1540 is
capable of:
Very clear images. The 1540 looks like an excellent lens. Could you post some comparisons with the fz5 and 1540 at the same 200mm ( 6x) zoom ?

Hi Wangi
do i need an adaptor.
Pass, I know that the FZ5 is 55mm up front and the TCON-14B is 62mm threads - i'll leave you the work out if it's a stepup ring or a hacksaw job (!) as others seem to be doing. The lighter (and more powerful, but not as highly rated) TCON-17 is 55mm threads (i think).
Your heron shot is a winner, did you use the tcon for that shot
Thanks, no that was without the TCON-14B. These were with it:

Thanks/L

Thanks all of you for the contributions

Wangi those TCON-14B generated images are exellent. do you use manual focus or auto. How do you minimize noise and chromatic abberation

I think i will now get down and make a decision on which tele to go for. Watch this space

Fred, such a test is meaningless since at that zoom ratio you're
better off using the FZ5 without an additional lens...
I'm impressed with the 7i/1540 images and am curious to see how the fz5/1540 images would compare at the same 200mm. I agree that you could take the fz5 up to 380mm ( 11x) and get the same magnification with better results sans the added glass. Meaningless? Perhaps. Just curious - that's all.

Total thickness including threads is exactly 5mm (I have a digital micrometer), and effective distance is only 2.5 mm.
I will probably buy another Pana adaptor and
trim it and leave it attached to the Raynox. That will give me a
quick twist to connect it.

I'll try to set up the same test shots w/ the FZ5 that I posted from the Minolta 7i. I'll try to get as close to 200 as possible and also shoot them at 12x. I did have the ability to tweak the focus w/ manual adjustments on the 7i (and I'm sure I did it for the original tests). I can tweak it a bit using a Manfrotto macro slide adaptor (model # 3419), but not having the ability to increase the magnification in the EVF makes it rather tedious. Take a pic, review it at high mag, if not perfect, tweak the distance (w/ focus locked), take pic, review again. Not perfect, but a work-around for the FZ5. I can't even remember why I bought it!
Here's a pic of the Manfrotto:

Your TL-55 shots look really good. The moon shot is very crisp and clean. At around $90, it seens like a pretty good deal. The light weight would seem to be more compatible with the camera (I have the FZ5).
