While on vacation my G1 stopped working. The "lens cap" message keeps blinking when the lens cap has been removed. I thought perhaps if I took the battery out and then put it back it would solve the problem but it is still inoperable. Does anyone have a solution to my problem aside from sending the camera to Canon? This is a huge disappointment to me as I was planning on taking many pictures during my trip. I have had the camera since last November and this is the first problem I have encountered. Does anyone know how long the warranty is for the G1?

Try pressing the shutter release - that is what you are supposed to do if you leave lens cap on during startup, it tells the camera to try again.

Sounds like the camera is trying to extend the lens but it's somehow stuck and cannot come out. Another possibility is that the motor has died. Do you hear any noise when turning on the camera? If yes, try to gently shake the moving lens part in case it is stuck. Be careful not to touch the lens element. If this doesn't work, the safest option is to send it to Canon, especially since it's still under warranty.

The G1 I bought yesterday, has no lens cap message at all, this feature is not mentioned in the manual either, did Canon change anything? My s.n. is 143806580.

It's a hell of a camera, amazing pic's right from the start.
Martin.

The lens cap message should only appear when you turn on the camera with the lens cap in place, so perhaps you haven't accidentally done that (yet).

Oh, yes I certainly made that mistake several times, no indication though.

I think if there appears a warning on the display, this is triggered by the resistance the lens senses, in that case it's obvious I don't get any message, because the cap itself has a very loose fit, and is pushed off by the lens easely.

Thank's for answering, Martin.
