What would be a good choice for a fixed focal length macro lens in combination with the D2X?

I was told the micro Nikor 60mm 2.8 does not perform very well with the digital camera's.
A better choice would be the new Sigma 105mm macro.
Anyone advice?

I couldn't be happier with my 60/2.8 micro-nikkor.

I'm not sure what your friends were talking about when they said it performed poorly. For me, it is ideal and a very strong performer on my D2x as well as my other dslrs.

I work with a ringflash for macro work, and the closer working distance helps . I wouldn't be able to work how I want to with a longer lens like the 105.

I also have this lens, and it is really very good.

The 60mm is arguably the sharpest Nikkor made, according to many/most.
Do you have any idea who or why such a peculiar thing was alleged.

That would indeed explain such an odd statement.

The 60mm f2,8 is one of the sharpest macro lenses I know of on digital.

Taken with the 60/2,8 on a D2h:

The story was told by a salesman in the shop where I use to buy my equipment.

He mentioned that the Micro Nikor 60/2.8 was an older type of lens not optimized for use with a digital SLR.
I raised the question here because I was not sure what to believe.

Ok, he's right - it isn't a "digital lens" - but who cares? It is one of the finest macro lenses that has ever been made.

This guy was working on commission and had a vested interest in selling you something else. Go to a different shop and pick up the 60/2.8, you'll love it!

Hi the 60mm nikkor isn't a bad lens, but I do not use mine that much and I definitely wouldn't choose it over my sigma 105 macro, personally I find the 180 sigma macro one of the best macro lenses I've ever had and I have had quite a few.

In other words, the universe was designed to produce the maximum number of habitable planets possible. Sounds like the Creator wants to see as much life as possible spring forth and that the likes of us is the purpose of the universe.

That lacks a cosmic perspective.

Only if you've swallowed "the opiate of the masses" and feel a need for a creation mythology. Order does not imply design, for me. I have a Darwin fish on my car.

Pray for me..I'm sure the flames (of both sorts) are coming.

Vernix, as I said before, yours is my favorite signature quote.

I have the Nikon 105 and the 60.

Both work quite well with the D2X. The 60 is absolutely the sharpest lens I have ever used - close up.

Of the lenses I have, the Micro 60mm 2.8 seems to be the sharpest. My other lenses are:
17-35 2.8
12-24 4
35-70 2.8
80-200 2.8 (old one ring model)

Here are some closeups of crazy lace agate with the 60 Micro. The first image is at 100% resolution and covers an area about 9mm wide. If it were printed at this res, it would make a print that is about 40 x 60".

The grain you see is actually in the stone.

This is a reduced version of the full frame:

The Micro 60mm is also good at distance. Here is a test shot.

Cropped to show full resolution. This is without any processing:

Someone mentioned it isn't a digital lens. Does anyone know what this meant? Obviously, all lenses are inherently analog. On the surface, it would seem that all of the qualities one looks for in a lens design would be equally significant for both film and digital sensors.

Well then,

the question is, what was he trying to sell you? There are no dedicated Macros specifically designed for digital that I know of.

Despite that, Micro Nikkors and other Macro lenses typically rank among the sharpest on digital slrs.

You'll rarely catch a good salesman in a lie, or substituting an unsubstantiated opinion for fact.

Probebly just that it isnt a Dx lens, wich means its better buildt and will work with ff Nikon bodies in the future
