Canon EOS Rebel (300D) Auto Focus Stopped Working

I have had my Rebel for a little over 1 year (just enough for the warranty to expire) and the Auto Focus just stopped working. I have tried different lenses and still nothing. The lens appears to attempt to focus, the lens moves in then out and then finally the green light blinks indicating it can't focus. This happens indoors/outdoors with more than enough light to focus.

It happened the first time about a week ago, I changed the battery and that fixed it that time.

The second time I was taking pictures, the AF was working, then it just stopped working. Nothing I have done has restored the AF capability.

Has anyone experienced this?? Is there a fix?? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

put it in MF and shoot. is 2/3 of the picture black? then the secondary mirror, used for AF, doesn't move correctly and the camera can't focus. the fix is service by canon.

Nekdo je moral Josefa K. o'crniti, zakaj ne da bi bil storil kaj slabega, so ga nekega jutra prijeli.

there was a post exactly like this today. first the MF worked, but then a spring of some sort fell off and the 2/3 black picture started happening. also the AF didn't work in the first place. well, it's more or less a issue to be fixed by canon's service.
In MF mode it appears to take pictures just fine.

Just a thought before sending it away...

You didn't happen to install the Undutchables hack lately, did you? In that hack you have a work-around where you can set the camera to use "AF-AI" focusing in the creative modes. However the workaround is that you have to press the left button while pressing the shutter button in order to trip the shutter.

I had a problem a while back when I was fooling with this one day and then put the camera away. The next time I went to take a photo (a few days later), I couldn't get the shutter to trip - forgot I'd changed the setting - and thought the camera was f_ d up. When I finally discovered the problem and set the focus to OS it worked fine.

Like I said, just a thought. This might have nothing to do with your situation.

Hi, had the same issue with my 300d after 11 months of usage. Canon service fixed it in three working days, it appeared to be some kind of mechanical minor flaw. Good luck!
