*** CTF Challenge 81 – Perspective Disproportion ***

What exactly do you mean by this? I've posted a shot in Eligible where the background is out of focus, would this count as visual distortion as i notice the shots so far in Exhibition have the foreground and background in focus.

Thanks
Paul

Abs, I am little (a lot) confused too...
The way I interpret the title:
1. Perspective - can be dealt with a single subject (in focus)
2. Dispropotion - requires atleast two subjects for comparison (in focus)

I find #1 to be an easier topic (with my limited skills). If it is #2, I find it very challenging, and would appreciate if someone could enlighten me on how to be creative with DOF.

Thanks
RK

This is perfectly on-topic...reasons...
  • There is no distortion in your main (fingers) subject.
  • no distortion in blurry background either
  • i never said anything about being everything in focus. as long as one can identify the subject, its okay for it to be out-of-focus. even example shots have oof background.
  • fingers look proportionally huge in the shot, satisfy "disproportional" part.
  • As you are comparing fingers and face...that can be considered two subjects even if they are two parts of one subject(you).
bottom line: you have a perfectly on-topic, and a good one at that, shot.
Now for the ...DOF is awesome.

i personally would have opted for off-centered composition to add more face details like squinting eye(aiming) or angry face.

PS: I am adding the link to Paul's photo, so that this clarification helps(hopefully) clarify others' doubts too.

RK, firstly I apologize if I was not clear enough in defining the topic. Let me try to explain...
1. Perspective - can be dealt with a single subject (in focus)
As a matter of fact, I added multiple subject requirement to avoid confusion/controversy.
2. Dispropotion - requires atleast two subjects for comparison (in
focus)
YES...you need multiple subjects in the shot but I never mentioned anything about being them in focus. ONLY the main subject, that you want to show disproportionately should be in focus.
I find #1 to be an easier topic (with my limited skills). If it is
  1. 2, I find it very challenging, and would appreciate if someone
could enlighten me on how to be creative with DOF.
It is #2 without "in focus" restriction.

In fact, given examples shots have blurry background too...so go ahead and shoot without worrying about DOF.

hope this helps...

Isnt EVERY photograph is like this ...
which shows objects at different distance from the camera?
That is where the word "Disproportion" come into picture.

Lets disect the topic title..."Perspective Disproportion".

when photograph shows objects at different distances from the camera, they are of different sizes but "proportional" nonetheless. loosely speaking, everything look "right" in the photograph.

so the task of a photographer for this challenge is to come-up with an angle ("perspective") that takes away the proportion feeling from the shot.

for an example, GeraldH's boot could have a real boot (regular size), 1ft, 2ft, 3ft tall...photograph does not portray its "real" size.

Please go through examples and posted shots (and my comments, sometime tomorrow, its 0130 hrs right now) you will know what I mean...hope this clears some muddy water for you.

Thanks Abs, i thought it was on topic but being the first to post made me think umm for a moment. I tried to get a bit more of me ugly mug in there with a threatening look but i didn't want to frighten the kiddies.

To me most of the entires look on theme except where this apparent distortion.

The visual effect called for, if you read the guidelines of the challenge basically says that the foreground object has to be such a size that the other objects related to it seem smaller because of the fact that the foreground object is disproportionate to the rest.

Now, if you have a good look you will see that most of the images have some distortion which is a normal characteristic of most short lenses.

A fisheye lens in this case would not be able to be used becauses the distortion is much greater than normal viewing.

No it's not a bleeding swan song it's just that I don't think I want to post in what is really a point & shoot type challenge anymore. Because me & the missus went to the Photo & Imaging show in Brisvagas to-day. We had a lovely time annoying all the sales reps & we had a good laugh. There was one sales rep that must have been salesman of the year because he sent us home with a 350D. Unbelievable I've been waiting two months for the black 350D to be released here in Oz & one or two weeks before it's released a bleeding salesman has sold me a silver one:-)

The news is not all bad as we spent a lot of time at the Canon display fondling the black 350D & the 20D. Mereana quite liked the 20D so did I:-) but the $900 difference kept raising its head & also I would feel a need to buy better lenses for the 20D. Soooo we went to where a shop that sold Canon had a stand & enquired about the prices & couldn't believe they had the 350D with the 18mm-55mm USM lens for $1598 a show only special (last week I saw it for $1799 with a non USM lens) But that didn't on its own sway me away from the 20D it was when I could get the 55mm-200mm USM for $175 (B&H in NY has it listed at $209us) It sells down here for just over $400. Now I was in real trouble I wanted a proper camera, a real mans camera that's big & black so I was still troubled by this small effeminate looking silver camera but it was putting up quite a fight against the 20D. Then the salesman of the year offered us a Sandisk 1 gig Ultra 11 CF card for $149 ($169 here on the net or around $200 in the shops) Now he saw us weakening & he went in for the kill, he could see I was a real mans man even though I was carrying Mereana's hand bag & he did a deal on the battery grip (normally $258) & put that in for $218 & he guaranteed me that the grip would turn the 350D into a real mans camera, even a silver one:-)

BUT I WANTED A BLACK CAMERA. He would do the same deal on a black one but I would have to wait about 2 weeks at least. So off we went back to the Canon stand where the reps were getting to know us by now even shouting to us "haven’t you bought anything yet" as we were back & forth all day fondling the cameras. Now they had a black 350D with a grip attached & silver one on its own. The black one with the grip looked like a pretend 1Ds & I wasn't sure if I liked it. We asked the rep to put the grip on the silver camera so we could see if it looked silly or not, well I'll be buggered we liked the look of it better. So we then toddled off back to the best salesman in the world & bought the bleeding silver one.

So we now have a silver 350D & battery grip with the kit USM lens the 55-200 USM & the 1gig card all for $2140. He only had the camera kit at the show so we will go in again tomorrow to pick up the rest of the stuff. We will also get a chance of seeing the photo exhibition & some more of the show.

Here is me best picy from the first batch I shot to night. The kit lens is a bit softer than Lee told me it was. He must be a dab hand in Photoshop to get slightly soft shots like mine up to his standard:-)

You old bugger.

Actually, some folks will miss you if you don't post anymore, those that live in the hospice anyway, so here's the deal......i'll give you free, gratis, for sod all a can of black touch up paint and you can spray your poxy 350 wotsit black and you can keep posting here. What do you think?

My G6 is silver and my pictures are okay so i don't think you having a silver camera will make any difference if you're that concerned, in fact that one you've posted above is noticably better than what you usually post. So c'mon, stick with the place you know best and show us what you can really do with a camera.............................................

...gawd elp us.

Regards
Paul

... during reading your story, I thought you would never buy one. 8-) I have never found it to be too soft. Just don't forget that USM is your friend.

I usually use 100 - 2.5 - 0 on most of my pictures. Sometimes up to 100 - 5 - 0.

Have fun with your new camera.

Hate to see you leave CTF. There have been many peole particiapate with a SLR.

I was only kidding:-) I just fired off some flash shots in the kitchen & had a play with the settings. That shot was on F8 & must have been a slow shutter or something. Of course I will stay here as no one else will put up with me:-)

I've been telling this lot for ages that when I get a DSLR I will win every challenge. Now I've got the bleeding thing it doesn't look too easy. I wish I had got a black one now, as at least it would look good hanging around me neck when we go shopping at Woolies.
Regards Rod

I'm sure you will win every challenge and we will all be as happy as larry. Don't worry about Woolies, down here in Sydney they don't let you in with a black camera but when you've got a silver one around your neck they only look at you as if you're some kind of moron so you fit in perfectly.

What are you planning on photographing if you're taking your camera into Woolies on a sunday morning? Nothing too candid i hope.....

Regards
Paul

Hi Rod,

I've been wondering when you'd stop procrastinating and get a real man's camera :-)

Welcome to the world of raw unprocessed photos and plenty of post processing on every one ;)

P.S. - I hope you don't suffer from "buyers remorse" on not getting the black one....

me black camera...

Kind Regards

Wow your one looks like real leather. There's not many around now as all I could see in the shops were the Ist ds. which don't look as good as yours. Well I'm set up now with two lenses which I hope will be all I need (I know, I know):-) Now I need some quite time to play with the camera & I might even look at the manual:-)
Regards Rod

Good luck with the new camera. Glad to hear your sticking around. I also just got the Cannon 55-200 mm USM lens (B & H $210.) and a Tiffen circular polarizer filter for $19.50. Just haven't had a chance to play with either one yet.

congratulations on your new camera.

btw, i woke up, opened the ctf thread and there was your message with subjects "i wont be posting here"...i jumped off my couch in happiness. i was like, i have achieved humanly impossible goal in the internet world. :)

actually...i was like "grrrrrreat, what did i do now?" i hate to see people leaving challenges, since these (you all) are the people who have walked me through the initial phase of photography.

looking forward to your excellent entries and as usual help with commenting on photographs. i really appreciate it.
just dont scare them off with your frame comments ;) just kidding :)

Rod - the kit lens is quite sharp if you keep it around f8, which will not be a problem with the 350D since you can crank up the ISO with no ill-effects.

Here's a cropped sample of my 350D with kit lens, ISO-400, f8, in-camera sharpness set to zero, USM after re-sizing. If the kit lens is soft, I can't wait to see what L-glass looks like with this camera! :)
