Hello,

I’m trying the new beta version of DxO Labs software.
And I have to say that the results are impressive.

If you have an A2, and are interested, you’ll find in the next post 3 « before and after » samples.

The first version is the original image (jpeg xfine), resized at 1024*768. No processing at all.

The second one is the DxO version. I set the software in « auto », batch processed the original images, then resized the pictures at 1024*768. No additional processing at all.

The pictures :

I did not know my A2 very well at this time, and I was sometimes tricked by the multisegment me-tering.

What is impressive is that DxO does all the job alone (fixing shadows/highlights, removing noise, adding usm, correcting distortion and vignetting, etc.)…

Maybe some pictures would need additional post processing, but as it is, this software is quite a-mazing.
Don’t know the price yet…

Very impressive. I saw you mention DXO beta 3 in another post today and since I downloaded it some days ago I installed it. I usually shoot raw so hadn't been eager to try it since it only does jpg with the A2. But after seeing your fabolous Egypt gallery I am beginning to consider shooting jpg for family shots and the like.

I found the user interface confusing when set to expert since I couldn't se the results af the corrections I made. Did you use automatic or what ?

Good day Peter,

I don't shoot raw very ofen, as I'm usually very pleased with the jpeg results of the A2.
I don't agree with those guys who find the A2 jpeg results are so-so.

The trick is to NOT increase contrast or sharpness in camera. I usually use normal settings, I sometimes decrease the contrast and/or sharpness.

The Egyp gallery was not processed with DxO. Since I got the beta version, I processed the pictures with it, and the results are even better.
But I didn't put the new version on line yet.

For the tests, I used full auto mode : I dragged the files in the DxO windows, and launched the batch processing. That's all !

PS : I visited your gallery. Very nice pictures, but you did half of the job !!! Why don't you tell us where the pictures were taken ? I like to travel just looking at pictures coming from other places in the world !

Bonjour André

Thanks for the info. I have just tried in auto mode and it is quite impressive. I even tried with pictures from my small casio Exlim 30 pocket camera and really didn't expect it to work with those files since there is no module for that camera but to my surprise it did, of course without lens correction but shadow, hue, sharpness worked.

As for my gallery many thanks for having a look and commenting. You're touching a sore spot because this is gives me a really bad concience it is almost totally unstructured and also not up to date. You're quite right about telling where the pictures are taken I will have to supply that info when I renovate the gallery. For your information all pics are from Denmark around where I live a little north of Copenhagen in a village called "Trørød" The Zoo and Tivoli is of cause from Copenhagen.

Just downloaded it and tried it on a few A2 jpeg and the results on auto were all a distinct improvement, yet subtly done - no heavy handed artificial looking changes. I was impressed.

It might narrow the gap between RAW and jpeg quality to the point that if you don't add sharpness or contrast in camera you can work in jpeg with little compromise. The batch processing on auto is also very easy.

When this goes commercial, is it likely to be available as a Photoshop plug in and what sort of cost is it likely to come in at?

I take it, by that stage, A2 RAW coverage will also be added.

It's certainly interesting and thanks for the pointer.

I'm afraid it will never be an add-in for photoshop, it is a stand alone program and as such more like a competitor. The price for vrs. 2.2 is 139$ and includes free upgrade to version 3. As for A2 raw files i'm not sure I wrote them a long time ago and the answer I got was that they didn't now. They are busy developing modules for all the dSLR bodies and all the lenses that goes with them ( a module for every single lens!!).
Like you I am impressed but it is rather expensive.

Hi,

I tried it the whole day and I must say it works quite well with my 20D images. It clears the pictures and gives them a bit more punch. But being honest I dont know if I am willing to pay such a lot of money for that. I think I'd rather go with CS2 and the pretty good addons of Fred Miranda. I just feel more comfortable this way. Anyway a good product but kind of pricy. As I am a student CS2 is quite cheap compared to DxO.

Hi,

With regard to DxO Labs adding support for A2 RAW images, I received the following reply from them on 16 Feb this year:-

"Hello Ian,

Unfortunately, we have no plans to support RAW for the Minolta A2 (nor for the SONY F828, Canon D60, and Nikon D2H and D100).

regards,

Sunthar

It's disappointing and I guess there is no likelihood of them changing their mind in the future, since KM have stopped production of the A2. Ah well, back to PS Camera RAW for the chromatic aberration correction and the PTlens plugin for pincushion and barrel distortion correction!

Best wishes
