My wife just found out how much I spent on the 1DsII...

Call it the bait and switch. Spend some time contemplating an expensive hobby that your spouse would detest. I mean really hate. Possibilities would be big game hunting, drag racing, off shore boating. You get the idea. Now create a plausible legend by "getting caught" researching your stalking horse hobby on line, maybe even get some catalogues.
Now wait.

When she finally lets you know what she thinks of your new idea of restoring WWI biplanes as a hobby, then switch to the "well I suppose I could get into (back into) photography despite the cost. At least we could both enjoy it...blah blah" (don't really say "blah, blah" she'll figure it out).

Don't thank me. I'm just here to help.

I support my wife with her horse and riding, and she supports me
and my photography. I'm not sure which is more expensive or time
consuming. But, it works very welll for us.
We went through the horse thing with two daughters. We owned two different horses.

Believe me, even Canon 1D class gear and L glass is not nearly as expensive as owning and showing horses.

...not even close.

...and she wasn't too happy!

How have your S.O.'s reacted to expensive equipment purchases? I
tried explaining to her that it will probably hold its value better
than a car, and will produce pics that can be enjoyed for years to
come... without much luck. ;)

My wife is also a photographer. She complained once I bought myself the 1DsMKII and left her with the 1DMKII. So I bought her the 70-200IS. Now she realized it is too heavy for her to shoot with it during weddings, I end up using it instead. I wonder what I should buy her next?

Once she realizes that there are worse things that could be happening, she will be much more tolerant.

Another trick is to take lots of pictures of her and her children. This also makes the equipment purchases more palatable.

mine surprised me this last xmas with one wrapped up under the tree. (and i mean surprised). she conspired with a friend who had his name on a couple of the lists, managing to get one from the first batch.

she's a keeper!!! (refering to the wife. not the camera :^)

Tell her to justify the amount that was spent on the wedding ring.

On a purely economic basis, a diamond bought at a jewely store is an awful investment. Because prices are controlled by a cartel, you paid at least twice as much as you would have in an open market. That ring depreciated much faster after you bought it than a 1DsII will.

You're an adult. NEVER JUSTIFY ANYTHING TO ANYONE.
Bad advice! You are an addult so act like one. Marriage isn't what's mine and what's hers. You guys are a 50-50 partnership. What kind of trust do you think she will have if you go sneeking purchases and whatever behind her back. Would you like it if she did the same to you. I don't know your financial condition but I'll bet you went into debt to get it. Besides being stupid to sneak around behind her back it's even more stupid to go into debt, if you did. I make several hundred thousand a year from my commercial work but any purchases for equipment are a mutual decision between my number one partner, my wife, and myself. My wife is the same in her business. One thing we do is to never spend more than we can pay for with cash in any given month. We never use credit if we can not pay for it when the bill comes in. This even applies to cars. We never purchase a car unless we have the cash to pay for it. It really doesn't matter how much you earn because this can work for anyone that has the dedication to do it. Above all I value and respect my wifes judgement and she feels the same about me.

no matter what advice you are given here, you only have to answer one question to know if you did right, Is the woman you live with, your wife and partner in life, or is she your room mate?
