FX8! :D

Maybe the new battery would fit in the FX7? You wouldn't get the better engine, but you'd get 262%+ of what you have now with a new battery!

Current batt (which you would still have) 100%
New batt 162%

+ your current batt would have last a bit of spark since you first got it so the new battery would actually be more than 162% of your old battery.

i think there is some heavy noise-reduction going on here.

it seems as the fx8 is applying the same in-camera processing as the lz2. that means: much heavier denoising and strange water-color look. although the lens is sharp, the images don't seem to have the same razor-sharp look as the ones from the fx7, it is a pity :(

You say "new CCD"...is that verified? I never saw any news regarding a new imager?

I might just have to pick one up this summer, to compare against my FX7. Im a little worried about the switch to Venus Engine Plus, because from what I have heard, it is inferior to Venus Engine II in terms of image quality.

I was kind of hoping that the FX8 was going to be a brand new model. Unfortunately, it just seems to be a freshining of the allready great FX7. I welcome the addition of the better movie mode, and the ability to play sound from the movies (I cant figure out why this feature is missing on the FX7... it seems so illogical to not have it). But other than that, I dont really see much of a need to upgrade. I dont shoot movies very often, and I have a spare battery for my FX7 allready. The screens are the same, and so is the lens and OIS system, and body.

Im looking forward to seeing some more sample shots, as the ones posted on the Panasonic Japan website seem a little noisy at ISO100, although to be fair the FX7 can be somewhat noisy at ISO100 in the shadows as well.

The following is quoted from the Pana Japan site.

"Venus Engine Plus

This is a more energy efficient version of the original picture-enhancing Venus Engine. It features outstanding high-speed response to help you capture beautiful shots instantly and efficiently."

I will not expect significant improvements with the image quality, but there must be some differences. The better noise control is one thing I suspect is a result of more sophisticated processing when the LSI circuit becomes more powerful.

Now aint that marketing ? They are basically saying that the Engine Plus is better than the original Engine which was Engine I, but the way they have worded it, most consumers will be mislead into beliving it is better than Engine II.

On a German dpreview-like website they quote the expected price of 550 Euro which is 705 Dollar.

I myself was excited about the FX8 but the website says "not available in the US or Canada" so no matter how great it will be with the longer batterly life/better video, it may never make it to the US shores :(

Sad that it isn't coming to the US and Canada.

not sure, even if it fits, it might not work correctly I think because it is using some sort of new Venus Engine and the FX7 might not be able to utilize it?

I find that often the manufacturers will decide to bring the models to the US & Canada eventually. It might be 3 months from now but I think it will be here for Christmas. That's just a guess but Panasonic's dealers will want the FX8 for the Christmas season.

If you look on the Japanese Lumix website, you can see that the new FX8 battery is thicker than the FX7 battery. Also, the FX8 battery is rounded on two of the sides, whereas the FX7 battery is rectangular with square edges. I dont think it would fit...

See the "food mode" sample. If this is as tasty as it's promising, this feature may be the best ever in any camera ever made.

Thats great! I always needed a special mode to take pictures of food. What will they think of next? TV mode to take pictures of TV screens? Newspaper mode to copy the daily headlines for later viewing? Digi-cam mode to take pictures of other digital cameras? Or how about ice cream mode? Or chest hair mode? Perhaps a morning coffee mode? (To perfectly capture all the subtle colors and textures of your morning cup-of-Joe more accurately.) hahaha...

I was really hoping to get the FX8 but it isn’t available for the US market now and not sure when it will eventually make it to the US so wondering if I should just hold off until then? was thinking about getting the FX7 but don’t want to regret it since there have been improvements in the FX8 model
