Best camera for under $500

My friend is looking to buy the best digital camera he can for
under $500. He expresses interest in macro shots. Any
recomendations?
It's not a new camera by any means. Don't know if you can buy it anywhere other than places like ebay. But, when hanging around the Nikon Talk Forum for over a year, everyone seemed to say the CoolPix 4500 was the "king" of macros. I use my Nikon 5400 for Macros, and it is no slouch. It can now be purchased for about $500 and there is a $200 rebate if purchased by06/30/2005 (ouch...I paid $650 for the 5400 about 15 months ago).

Gail:

I just ran a few tests on my a510. This is probably the best 3mp camera for under $200, except for the L-O-N-G flash cycle.

Some people have said that flash cycle is fast with the LCD turned off. This is partially true. According to my tests, flash took about 2 seconds longer to recharge, with the LCD on.

With LCD off, the recharge light blinks only for a few seconds and makes you think that the camera is ready. But the flash is not ready at that time and you cannot take the next picture until much later. This varies with how much flash was used up.

In small areas, a 4x4 closet, the flash is not completely used up and it is ready again within 2-3 seconds. With LCD on it takes twice as long. In this case the time difference is quite noticeable.

In an open spaces the flash discharge is complete and it may take up to 12 seconds to recharge. In the latter case it takes only a couple seconds longer with the LCD left on.

I leave the LCD on because the trade off is only a few seconds.

You may want to confirm this and add it to your blog.

oly c5050 if you can find one.

It's an incredible digicam for the price. I can't believe the great, well-saturated shots my daughter takes with it, and she is only a point and shooter who uses fully automatic or scene modes.

Well, please don't tell my daughter! For the most part, only folks frequenting forums like this one would even know the flash recylce was "l-o-n-g."

Great info! I will test it and add it to my blog as soon as time permits. Right now I have company for the next two weeks...daughter and grandson. So I'm having lots of fun playing with the a510!
