How good IS can be? (pic)

DidierV,
Excuse me for messing with you pic, but this is after Focus Magic.

If you want me to take it off, please let me know and I will do so immediately.
In any case, check out Focus Magic-it is a neat program.

I took this shot just for fun, and just to see how well the IS
performed on my Canon 17-85, SHOT HANDHELD
Exif: 1/2s; f:5.6; 85 mm; iso 100
I did apply some USM in photoshop.

Yuk! Green lines! And an over sharpened look. I prefer the original even with the little camera wobble.

Excal,

Just took a couple minutes to show how Focus Magic can remove the "wobble". All the artifacts/"green" etc are probably a function of the combination of the original post processing and my quick Focus Magic. It can be a useful tool in some situations. And it is a good sharpener as well.

These type of shots are cool. I saw a guy in the oncoming lane from me roll his '67 Ferrari trying to do the same thing once. He had the camera duct taped to the passenger side of the dash with a remote shuuter release. He lost control, oversteered and hit a concrete barrier at 75 MPH.

The camera actually survived.

I wish my car's tachometer was that cool-looking. I drive a 2000 Toyota Camry Solara and the instrument panel is very bland. Nothing colorful like that... What car is this from?

And as a result this pictures is blurred.

The IS gives you a 3 stop advantage. So the shot at 1/2s corresponds to what you can shoot at 1/16s without IS. The chances of having pictures at 85mm 1/16s are pretty slim, and likewise the chances of a good picture at 85mm 1/2s with IS are pretty slim.
I absolutely love IS, but its 3 stop advantage is not a 6 stop advantage...

Still learning to use the DRebel (only around 12.500 shots)
Public pictures at http://wwwis.win.tue.nl/~debra/photos/

I never pretended the shot was tack sharp, but as far as I am concerned, 1/2s handheld at 85 mm, giving this kind of results is far better than what I could expect with most lenses.
I am perfectly aware I was pushing the lens beyond its limits.

Of course I have no intention of printing it, but it is more than acceptable for me to look at even on a large monitor.
