I have one question for all the forumist.

Why don't we post more photo and talk more about photo as art and composition than as a way to buy this or that camera? I feel a little tired of all those comparision of this and that camera..dslr vs fz20..noise level. Please stop!! It's useless.

WITHIN LIMITS, you can post whatever you like.

The explosion in digital photography and the internet are occurring simultaneously and a lot of people, including myself, are having to learn a lot of new things. Consequently, as new people arrive on the forum they are often asking the same questions as before. Most, not all, on this forum will gently guide them in the right direction.

There are some very good photographers on this forum, and I find just watching their photos and reading what they have to say one can learn a lot.

I understand most of them have to work, a word that, fortunately, no longer exists in my vocabulary.

It's not that long ago that people were complaining that the forum was all photos and not enough tech talk. It swings backwards and forwards ... when Panasonic is about to or releases new models it goes all tech, then after a while it goes back to photos until a new release is expected. I look for threads which I think will be interesting or to which I think I might be able to contribute and ignore the rest.

I stumbled across this site whilst exploring what digital to buy so hands on comparisons ccan be useful. The endless Nikon v Canon debates on other forums are a bit much though.

Yup, it's six and half a dozen. Things can get tedious with the same questions being asked time and time again - hello search function!

I purchased my 1st digital camera last week...FZ20 after trying out the FZ5 for a few days. The ability to use this forum to discuss issues regarding both these cameras was invaluable to me. I would hate to see it changed.

The only possibility would be to split between technical issues & composition issues into two separate threads but still have one site.

Thanks to all that have, & continue, to help me!

I bought an FZ20 in December 2004 after lurking in this forum for a few months. Back then, as a consumer looking for a camera, I found the various tech discussions very helpful and I enjoyed seeing people's photos as examples of the camera's capabilities. Now, as someone who's now taking pictures with the camera (someday I'll get a photo web hosting site and post photos), what I would personally like is if people would discuss HOW they got such great pictures a little more than they do.

My point is that the forum appears to serve lots of people who are in various stages of shopping for or learning how to use their cameras. It's all good. Limiting the forum to one or another person's particular interest would be like deciding not to teach reading in elementary school because the sixth graders already know how to read.

Maybe what would help is for people to be as descriptive as possible in their subject headings and for people browsing the forum to be selective. If you don't need to know how an FZ20 compares with a Canon G6, you don't need to waste your time on posts with the subject heading "FZ20 vs. Canon G?"

jonny, when I get tired of the same old pics and questions, I spend some time over at the retouch forum. If you aren't already a user, you can learn Photoshop.

I personally enjoy the back and forth discussions on camera type, brand,
capability, etc....

Most of my questions are answered somewhere in the posts. I look a
lot at the never ending debate regarding point and shoot/dslr.

Also look a lot at the noise (there's that n word again) discussions
that both camps cling so fervently to.

I choose what to open and what not to open.

I also choose to accept the responses that come flying back if I give
an opinion based on experience that nobody wants to hear.

It's all good as far as I'm concerned.

The few people I know that actually use cameras in person can't even
compare to the daily source of information in this forum.

I wish people would be a little pickier about which photos they post, unless they are looking for suggestions, then they can post the crappy ones, too! ;) But I also enjoy the 'techie' and equipment posts - how would I come up with my Christmas list without them?!?

One thing, though, that I particularly like about this forum AS IS - this is our little refuge. I don't want to post a shot that I think is good over in Samples and Galleries just to have a Canon or Nikon dslr user tell me my camera is cr@p because it's a Panasonic. We also have a unique comonality in being long zoom users. It's just more fun around here to have that bit of freedom and safety from criticism. This is a pretty civil place. (Most of the time.)

You of course are free to ask that, just as you are free not to look a the threads that are clearly marked XvsY.. But I thought the name of this forum was "panasonic talk".. Implying it is the space dedicated to the discussion of panasonic cameras..

With respect to posting photos, the rules state:

"Posting many pictures - Do not post many pictures in one message, instead post a link to a gallery. Posting several messages with just one image in each in a short period will be treated as SPAM - it will be deleted."

In his suggestion area, Phil (the moderator) suggests
  1. Please use "Samples & Galleries" - We encourage our users to embed image links into their text, however if you're simply posting a link to your favourite picture or your latest gallery we'd ask you to post this in the Samples & Galleries forum
The X vs Y discussions are far from useless to someone who hasn't addressed them yet. You were probably once there too.

Jeff

Without this forum I personally would have been totally in the dark about what accessories I would be interested in purchasing to go along with my FZ10. The technical info was provided through the forum and I was able to make a half educated decison about what teleconverter, wide angle and macro lense to purchase as well as adapters, filters, monopods and yes, even the bag to carry my equipment. I have yet to meet anyone personally that has a Panasonic FZ camera so the people on this forum have become like friends and are certainly great mentors for me.

Does anyone know if there are forums on any website that offer a more artistic discussion? I like these forums a lot, but I'm also interested in learning more about the creative side. I enjoy photography, but I have no background in art.

I looked at the Samples & Galleries forum on this site. It looks like most of the responses to people asking for critiques are simple compliments or discussions about lenses.

Thanks,
jbf

I would not have bought a FZ3 without comparisons from members.

PS.I am happy with my purchase as my old camera was an Olympus 2040 with a 1.7 telephoto on it.

argh... that's exactly what I DON'T want... the majority of the threads here are photo posts and no one critiques them at all; everyone just gushes over everyone else's work no matter how crappy. It is very rare I actually see constructive criticism, not to mention that fact that 90% of the posts are flower pictures.

I come here mainly to help answer technical questions and give opinions on the camera and gear I own, and it has become quite rare that I can actually help. Still, it's a great way to blow time.
