CS 2 POLL: What Service Pack do you use?

Bridge installs with the program. I tried moving and deleting and had conflicts. I use File/OPEN by double clicking the grey PS background.
Chip, I don't have CS2, but I might get it if there is an option to
skip installing the bridge part of it. As I understand, the bridge
is a higher powered version of the File Browser tab that PS7 has.
Which I don't use.

I'm pretty comfortable with Windows Explorer for organizing my
files, everything is all set up in hierarchies already. I use
ACDSee or FastStone to view the files.

So as I understand it, there is nothing about the bridge that I
need. Or am I way off on this?

BTW, I am using Windows 2000, I hope there is no issue there. Also
Xandros Linux, v. 3 Deluxe. (which I hope might run CS2)

Thanks,
Bob

My setup isn't consistent at this point. I went to distributed cache files but I don't know if it helped much. Sometimes Bridge has a significant lag (even when it's not cache building), but about 75% of the time it's ok. There's always a long (annoying) delay for me when switching between filmstrip/thumbnail views -- not sure if that's just one of those things that has to be or not.

Startup time is about the same as CS1 for me (if I don't count the time it takes to launch Bridge). I don't see a big change in the overall speed of the program. Some operations/filters are definitely slower.

The variability in my setup probably means that I'll be able to solve it sooner or later.

I see more people posting the CS2 slowdown issues vs. those that
don't have problems (which is understandable...people don't post
when they don't have these problems). I am wondering if it might be
a service pack issue. Can people post their configuration? You can
find it by right clicking My Computer/Properties under the System
header.
I've seen these posts also and I have experiensed some speed issues also since upgrading to CS2. However, I tried changing my scratch disk settings according to the manual.

The manual of CS2 suggests : "scratch disks should be on different drive than any large file you are editing" and "on different drive then the one used for virtual memory"

I now use my program folder D:\ (Photoshop...) as 1st scratch disk and all large tiffs are on separate (physical) disk.

At least on my computer this had CLEAR impact on CS2 speed. All 3rd party plugins are running so much faster then on CS1. Also opening files is considerably faster (did't notice improvement on CS2 strating speed, however.). And no more freezing of the whole program.

So if you have been experiencing speed issues on your CS2, I suggest to try tweaking your scratch disk settings.

System requirements for Win 2k says SP4, does it work ok? I have Win 2K with SP4, no problems, faster than CS, bridge works great.

. . . lies in using Bridge. Until Bridge loads all the images, makes previews, and records metadata it will bring your system to its knees. Simply close PS and restart when this happens. If you have thousands of images it is GOING to take hours. Once all the data is loaded it zips along. Try to keep your font number to under 400. There is a fix coming out for this.

HI Phi,

Yeah when it came in I wiped the harddrive clean and did a fresh install of the entire system just to get everything clean. Installed all the way to SP3 and haven't had one issue yet..

Waiting for one more 1 gig chip that should be here tomorrow and can't wait to see what happens then..

Thanks Steve,

Although I don't have that many fonts I wasn't aware of that issue.
Yep, Steve's exactly right. Too many fonts can slow your system down, and I recall that PS has always been sensitive to that.

Also, what I've been doing is using distributed cache rather than centralized cache. That way the cache files get saved to the folders, and if I burn those folders to a cd, the cache files go with them.

I think the problem is it loads everything, not just pictures. Personally, I don't need a second Windows Explorer.

From watching the cd, I was under the impression that it loaded all other Adobe programs (Illustrator, Go Live, etc) if you have Version Cue. But I didn't think it involved itself with non-Adobe applications. But I went back and checked the File Associations in Preferences, and its a pretty wide spectrum. I don't know if some can be toggled off to slow things down.

Regarding fonts, however, I haven't noticed a problem. I have nearly 700, they are all activated, and PS goes through the initial startup just bipassing the font activation as if I had 2 fonts. (In PS7, I made myself coffee during this part).

everything...dlls, .exe, .dat...entire programs.

All I see in Preferences are RAW, Vector, or Graphic files...and ALL files. You would think PHOTOSHOP would have had Picture files as a choice.

I do... It might open MY Documents with 120 files (pictures and .docs) but if you go to any other drive/partition/ folder you will find all files listed.
If you know anyway to show psd thumbnails in Files/Open could you post it?

Don't quite understand chip. Are you caching your whole hard drive?

Why not just 'my pictures' folder or more spefically, only those
folders in 'my pictures' that you'll be using.

Still not sure here. When you say 'I do' do you mean you load your whole hard drive or 'my documents' or 'my pictures' (or do you just put all images, docs, etc. in 'my documents'? If the last, I'd suggest you use the 'my pictures' subfolder in 'my documents' for images only, and in Bridge just browse to that folder and cache only that folder. (also note that any corrupted files that you may not have cleared out of the folders, esp. tiffs, will hang Bridge.).

As far as 'Files/Open' if you are talking about in Bridge - you have to have cached the psds first.

I don't feel qualified to really join in this discussion since I may not be completely grasping the problem. However, I noticed that in the Preferences for the Bridge (General, Favorites) there is an option for unchecking all or any of the icons that appear in Favorites (you can uncheck "My Computer" or "My documents", etc.)

I'm not sure if doing so simply removes the icons that would take you to these places quickly or remove the content from the functions of the Bridge. But it is the only preference that remotely addresses what will appear in the Bridge.

I don't think there is much you can do in the File Type Associations tab because you can't seem to be able to alter anything there. It even has file extensions for programs and cameras that I don't own.
