How much memory?

We all have our digicams and they came with a (?)MB card. I was wondering what is a good amount to have?

I've got my Powershot Pro70 w/ 8MB CF card. I'm going on vacation to Chicago next month and don't have a laptop to download the pics to.

So I guess what I'm asking is....How much memory is a safe bet? And a good place to get them.

I'm thinking about a 16MB or a 20MB since the price isn't to bad.

Thanks in advance,
Mitch

Standard, a 15MB CF-card was delivered with my Pro 70. It can take 49 jpg's in the Large-fine quality. I bought a second CF-card from Sandisk (48MB) and it can hold 127 jpg's in the Large - fine quality (costs +- 200 Euro).

16 or 20 is to little I guess - about 50-60 pictures. That's the amount I take on one day ...
I live in Belgium-Europe, so where to get?
I know I'm very happy with the Sandisk CF.

How much memory? That's like asking how much money do you need... more is almost always better -- grin I have put two 32 Mb Lexar cards in my Pro-70 and each gives approx. 80 pictures in Fine/Large mode. (I almost never shoot in the lower quality modes, but at that, each card can get about 140 in Normal/Large, about 180 in Small/Fine and over 325 in Normal/Small mode.) So... using that as a basis, figure about how many pictures your expect to take on your vacation. Remember, you can mix modes and also you will likely want to erase the shots that aren't keepers.

I bought the Lexar cards at my local CompUSA. I see today (7/22) that buy.com is selling 40Mb CF cards for $97.95

Looks like a heckuva deal to me.

Happy shopping!

How ever much you have, it is not enough. :-) Ask yourself how many pictures you want to take before visiting your PC. Seriously. I wanted to be able to take my Pro 70 on a week-long vacation and happily shoot away just as I used to do with my EOS Elan II (with 10+ rolls of film in my pack).

I loaded up my Pro 70 with two 48MB SanDisk cards and during my recent week-long trip to New England and Nova Scotia and I came home with 50 pictures left over. To maximize my storage I chose Large/Standard. I did some testing before I left home with printing 8x10 images at large/fine and large/std and no one I showed them to could tell the difference (when printed on Photo 700).

Large/std gave me a capacity of 247 images per 48MB CF (494 max). More than enough for my trip without sacrificing quality.

Your mileage may vary.

I see I jumped in on this post too late, but for future reference, you might want to check CF prices at http://www.newegg.com before you buy. I just ordered 2 128MB cards at $65 each (shipped).

I carry a Pro 90 and an S100, with 128MB and 64MB, respectively. I tend to shoot at the highest resolution (JPG) on each camera. The extra cards are for a trip to Calgary in the next week or so :)

I just picked up a 128MB Sansdisk CF card at Best Buy for $69.00. For me, that's barely enough - it will take about 70 RAW pictures in my G1. I was lucky on the price, it was an opened item.

Just ordered one from Newegg also. Mitch, I would go ahead and buy one also because then you can shoot at full resolution just to be safe. The guys who have tried them reported no problems. Good shooting on your trip.

Did anyone notice the price for the IMB 1GB microdrive at their site?

If you want to go that route, it's about $0.28/MB! Cheapest I've seen, and room for plenty of RAW images.

Duh, it's $0.36/MB - still cheap - even with correct math. :)
