D100 discontinued?

According to the Swedish retailer Madeco, the D100 is to be discontinued (or already is). They are offering "the last cameras" at a lower price. Madeco is known to be a reputable shop, but of course they could have got it wrong. However, I also noticed that the D100 isn't even listed anymore at Scandinavian Photo, one of the biggest retailers in Sweden.

This could possibly mean that the announcement many of us are waiting for isn't that far away. Has anyone else heard anything?

I for one hope this is true as I have been wanting to upgrade from my D70 and the d2x is not even close to being in my ballpark.

...so I do not think that something new is coming soon, maybe Fall 2005 or PDA 2006 and available Mai 2006

D100 an oldie but a goodie.

Speculation abounds as to the D200.

I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Look, Nikon has the low end market which the D100 was
aimed at when it came out, now with the D70s and D50.
The higher end DSLR's are not of interest to those that would
buy a D100 anyway.

Nikon already has their bases covered.

the D100 has been out of production for a few months. Any D100's in stores are existing stock. Of course, Nikon reps aren't known for really knowing what they're talking about.

I would bet that it is not discontinued, but simply getting an overhaul.
D70> D70s & D2H> D2Hs type of improvments

In otherwords, updated firmware, perhaps a better buffer, 2" LCD etc.

Its still a good camera, just needs to be notched up a little to fill in a gap just above the D70s

I'm hoping that Nikon decides that there is a new market to go after, a group of photographers that are looking for high quality images, but who don't need the speed and durability (and cost) of a D2x. Call us the digital landscape shooters. I think this has been a MF film market until now, shooting Pentax 67, Mamiya 7, and the like.

It's in stock.

"On special" means nothing about current production. When I bought mine two years ago it was on special. The deal then was free shipping.

It could be out of production, but there's nothing on the B&H page to indicate that.

I'm not sure why people want this camera to go out of production, or why people really expect Nikon to replace it with something at an equivalent price. The big deal with the D100 when it came out was that it was half the price of the D1, and thus within reach of people who could not afford a pro camera. The D70(s) and D50 provide that low end, now even better.

Then there are at least two of us. I'm eagerly waiting for a D2X sensor in a D100 body. I was expecting this camera next year, but now I'm hoping to see it announced within a few months.

the camera is still on nikon usa website, and nikon still supports the camera

who told you definitevely it is no longer produced?

i love these i know what the president of nikon had for dinner!

Surely, there can't be two of the kind. By the way, the D1X and the D1H are still on the official Nikon web sites. I'm not convinced that they are in production.

I really hate that phrase "according to a Nikon rep I talked to..."

Back in January, "according to a Nikon rep I talked to," the D200 was going to be announced at PMA 2005. According to a different "Nikon rep I talked to" more recently, the D100 was going to be announced on April 20 (the day that the D50 and D70s were officially announced).

If I listened to "my Nikon rep," I would never have purchased a D100 2 years ago, because I would have expected the D200 to come out way back then!

"My Nikon rep" now thinks that it might come out in October 2005. But until it's officially announced, don't believe anything you hear!

"My Nikon rep" is also telling me the D3 will be on the shelves for Christmas and will sell for less than the current D2X... :)

People want a digital "F100", and Nikon has not answered the call yet.

The D100 is NOT the digital F100 becaues the D100 does not share anything with its professional counterpart (D1X/D1H) at the time. Compare to the F100 which share a lot of components with the F5 like the CAM1300, etc. The D70/D70S is definitely NOT the replacement which some folks have hope for but it is a nice entry level body with good features. Just like the remarkable F70 from the past, but definitely not a "F100".

I'm not saying the D100 is a piece of junk. It is still a good camera. It is just not what some people wanted it to be. People want a semi-pro/pro-sumer body which some pro. features but w/o the pro. price tag - just like the F100 in the past.

However, I also think since Nikon has now covered their bases in the pro. level (D2HS and D2X) and the entry level (D50 and D70S) they may not have the motivation to make a semi-pro, "F100" like DSLR body.

Even if a camera is not in production already, Nikon will still support it for the next 10 years or more (that means parts, repair etc.) as they will the D2H.

For many D100 owners (like myself) the upgrade has occurred already once the D2H price dropped to $2000. It is such an awesome camera that it's hard to think that any D200 would come close (perhaps that's why the D200 will not come).

The D2Hs is about $3000 street price, whithin 6 months would probably turn $2499 - That could be a viable upgrade to the D100 owners (not a steal as was the D2H), but still a very professional body.

SO: D50 - $750, D70S - $900, D100 - $1299, D2Hs - $2500, D2X - $4500

Indeed all bases are covered, as was mentioned before.

Ditto that.

There are some of us who don't want to pay more for the "durability" in return for a heavier and clamsier camera. Just want the hi-res and pro AF, and vertical release.

It really is. I still have my D100 and MB-D100 and I have to say of all my camera bodies and the bodies I've tried it's my favorite. My D2H continues to give me fits, but my D100 still continues to impress me.

We never saw any price drop over here. The lowest price of the D2H was SEK 33,000. That's $4680 at the current exchange rate (or $3744 excluding taxes). I wouldn't call that a steal. The D2Hs is in fact slightly cheaper. Lowest price of D2X is $6227 ($4982 excl taxes).
Now do you understand the need for an upgraded D100?
