Okay, I'm obsessed...But how often can one watch this by merely walking out the back door at work? And especially in suburban Los Angeles...The babies were taken at 48x full digital zoom, 1/1000 sec at approx. f3.7 and extra stabilization supplied by a mini-tripod. Some curve adjustment and saturation in PSP8.1.

At 14 days old, the little ones are becoming adventurous --- and rambunctious..but Mina keeps a watchful eye on them.

Feeding Time!

You may not want to look TOO close at what Willie is bringing in, but trust me --- it's a pigeon....

TEN-HUTTT! 2 babies stand at attention for Dad's inspection, while the 3rd will probably be sent to latrine duty...

The onrunning gallery is here --- http://trailhiker.smugmug.com/gallery/477158

Best Wishes,
Steve

If those pictures don't bring a smile to your face, you better call the coroner! :-)

Fantastic series, Steve...those babies are so cute, it's beyond words!

I had the TL-55 teleconverter on too, so that bumps it up to --- what, 72x? -- something like that. I take the pics in late afternoon after work so the light is pretty good to get the details. I use an aperture of around 3.7 to 4 to minimize the dreaded purple fringing, which I have noticed in some of the pics I've printed out at 8.5 x 11.

Thanks for looking!

I AM worried that one will eventually fall out, though --- whether by accident or design. It seems as if Mina is building up the edges of the nest to diminish the risk factor, but they're so rambunctious and wandering --- and they have about another 30 days in the nest, by which time they'll be nearly fully-grown but still won't be able to fly --that I feel like standing below with a catcher's glove in case one gets "defenestrated", so to speak :o) . Have you obtained roof access yet to spy on the turkey vulture nest?

Yes, it's a heaven-sent opportunity for the Fluzi to really shine. The high burst mode is especially good during feeding time (every 3 hours or so) to get all the munching action. I've only been watching them for about 2 weeks and I already have over 1000 pics...Thank the Gods for digital....

I think the Turkey Vulture nest was abandoned (either that or the maintenance guys got rid of it). There's still several TVs that hang around the building and occasionally roost on the roof, but I think they've given up on the housekeeping idea. Management probably thought it wasn't too good for our corporate image to have vultures perched on the roof, looking down at customers entering the building! :-)

OMG! These are just fabulous! They could be printed in to Ranger Rick magazine. Don't laugh, Ranger Rick is one of the best publications with the best wild life photos around! It's a National Wildlife Federation publication for kids.

I'm thrilled for you to be right there capturing these views the way you are. They are FABULOUS! Thanks for much for sharing Steve. Keep up the fantastic work cause I'm greedy and want to see more! :-)

Steve you are putting together a fantastic sequence of photos.

You are demonstrating why digital photography has opened the door to the amateur which film could never do. You say you have taken 1,000 pictures (not sure kept or taken), the cost and the storage problems would leave you with empty pockets and a headache.

You keep taking, and we will keep watching.

I transfer them to CDRWs 'cause this may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I'm not up there EVERY day but I would be if I could...I'm going to keep this up for as long as I can. I'm creating quite a buzz here at Kaiser Hospital...Great fun, and the Fluzi is just magnificent.

That Ranger Rick sounds intriguing. I gave a copy of a baby pic to a friend to give to her son to take in to "show and tell". He was the hit of the class...Know anything more about where I can ask about submitting some photos to Ranger Rick? Do they have a website?

and it's great to see your amazing results - superb images.

Looking forward to the story unfolding and seeing more from the concrete canopy.

Do you have any legislation over there to protect birds of prey? It's pretty tight over here, some species get police protection!

The sun's always shining - sometimes we just can't see it!

It's nice to have someone here who understands my obsession... :o) I plan to keep a photographic journal of Mina, Willie and the babies until they fly off, which should be in another month or so.

Here is the website of the National Wildlife Federation
http://www.nwf.org/

From there there is a magazine link at the top of the page that you may find some information. Seems like they would LOVE to have your photos. It's just the type of photos I see in their publication.
Make sure you keep us posted!

It's the right camera at the right time! I think it's the only digicam that could've caught the action at that extreme distance; only a DSLR with a huge zoom would've had comparable success.

Steve,

I noticed on your website you just have a continuous flow of pictures. I thought that if you put the pictures in a succession of one or two week galleries, this could have more meaning for the viewer. See my website on Spain for this idea.

Also, any chance of borrowing Willie for a few hours. My friends over the road have these pigeons camping out on their roof, and at night they can hear them walking around in their hobnail boots. They thought he may be the answer to their problem.
