All the of the recent 1DMKII price drops

It makes sense to me. 8MP is not adequate for my work, and neither
is the lack of the best features on the 20D. A 12mp 1DMKII at
$4500 matches the D2X, hopefully improves on it a little, and for
those who can afford it the 1DS MKII is still there if you want the
highest resolution.
It makes sense to me too, but that doesn't make it rational. :) An EOS-3 type body between the 20D and 1-series also makes sense to me, but both bodies contradict what Canon has done in the past and what they've said about their plans for the future. That being said, maybe Canon will surprise us, but I doubt it. Though I am curious on how they'll make good on their plan to merge the 1D and 1Ds into one high-res, high-speed body. There's a pretty huge price difference, and I doubt they can make FF chips in enough volume to satisfy the 1D/1Ds market. We'll see I guess.

And by Jan 04, they'd announced the 1D-II. Sounds like we may have another body coming.

That'd make me very happy. I'm currently debating keeping my 20D, or keeping it an adding a 1D, or replacing it with a 1D-II. What I really need is something between a 20D and a 1D. I like the 8MP for cropping and the good high ISO. I need the focus of a 1D. Sounds like a 1D-II, but I'd make some compromises to save $1-2K.

well, the 1dII hasn't gotten quite to the $2.9-3K price level yet...

Wouldn't you like a slightly bigger file? say, 11MP? on the 1.3 crop?
Even Less noise?
Better blue channel response?

I know, i'm scratching for something, but hey how would they stay in business otherwise? :-)
I can't imagine what they could do to the 1DMkII for me. It's been
a perfect camera. A larger file would just get in the way (I have
the Ds for big stuff), and I barely use the 8FPS mode as it is.

For me, everything they could improve in the 1DMkII could be done
in firmware...things like multiple "Load Camera Settings" setups
and a few other tweaks.

mmmm... yes the Leica/Kodak R module sounds interesting - butwhat i'd really like to see is a digi-M Leica!

Sorry about the Off topic...
I am a Nikon shooter still on the fence. I am waiting as much as
anything for the higher quality to come down to a more reasonable
price point across all brands. $8K is still too much for me, when
I will need at least two bodies and a new set of lenses to boot.

The D2X is the first that gets me close to where I want to be. A
12MP 1DMKII with it's better (than Nikon's 1.5) 1.3x factor is one
of the choices I want to have before I make my final decision. This
camera and format offers the best of both worlds. It costs less
and offers the advantages of Nikons strategy of the sensor
utilizing the best/sharpest portion of the lenses image circle. In
another year a high MP FF Canon will likely be at a price point
where I can afford it, and I'll have an excellent back up in with
the 12mp 1DMKII(if I go Canon). I also hope there will be a new
offering from Kodak, and look forward to seeing how Leica/Kodak's
10mp CCD stands up to the current generation of CMOS sensors.

My bet is all of these upcoming models will be here by this summer.
The sooner the better.

Canon's pro cameras have always been focused on market demands by function. Price point is important for consumer cameras, but pros buy what they need.

The 1D II does its job very well. I don't see any reason for Canon to be in a big hurry to replace it.

You know, 11MP wouldn't really be enough of a jump to make me want to upgrade. At 3500 pixels wide, the 1DMkII files are plenty big for the jobs I shoot with them. 5,000 is great for the big jobs, and there's nothing in between I really need.

What WOULD make me switch is a high dynamic range sensor. If they were to release a camera with true 16-bit per channel resolution I'd buy it tomorrow.
