After dropping blatant hints to my sister, I finally got the CP 995. Compared to my old Olympus D-620L, the Coolpix is a major upgrade.

Originally wanted a Canon D30 but my sister said "no way!" So I lowered my standards and settled for the Coolpix. I'd say I'm pretty impressed with pictures I've taken so far. There are some things I don't like about it: the grinding sound it makes during focusing and the EXTRA complicated menu. It took me a day or two to figure out how to record in tiff (ok now, don't laugh at me). The instruction manual isn't really keen into listing which feature turns off when another is turned on.

Anyway, here are some samples (that turned out decent while I'm trying to figure out the camera):

Congratulations!

Great camera, nice pictures and a wonderful sister (can I have her?). :-D

Glenn, you've got a good eye for photography. When you get used to your Nikon, you're gonna love it! Think your sister would adopt me?

Nice pictures coming from a digital camera with "lowered standards".

So, how much better do you think these photos would have been with a Canon D30? ;)

Thanks...:) It was my sister who introduced me to photography (film) and taught me the basics. She's a "semi-pro" meaning all the professional equipment and expertise but would do it for free if a friend requests her. She does action photography but specializes in theatrical production pictures. She presently photographs the chorus and young artists of Austin Lyric Opera. I, on the other hand, love portrait and macro photography and I sing in the opera chorus. So guess who gets the best photos? I also do the dirty job of developing B/W film and prints for my sister.

I already "love" my Coolpix even though I'm still exploring it's capabilities. I'm finding out that I like the manual mode better than the auto. Anyway, this site and this forum helped me a lot in deciding which camera I wanted. And after printing out sample photos and tech. specs. of the Coolpix, Sis. finally got wind of what I was hinting.

It's funny because when we were younger, my sister and I fought like cats and dogs. Who would have thought that we would be the best of friends when we got older.

Glenn

PS. I tried to embed the pictures in my post but they ended up as links instead. I read some of the responses to my post and they all were embedded. How do you embed the pictures.

I should have typed "lowered the price range."

Well, the Canon D30 was (and probably still is) my dream camera just because of the interchangeable lens and the not so high price compared to a Nikon D1 series. It actually came down between the Canon G1 and the 995. The 4x tele-zoom lens, the good reviews and this forum influenced my decision to go with the 995.

Glenn

Hi Glenn,

If you still want a D30 I think I know how to get it... due to the response to your post all you have to do is auction off your sister to the highest bidder... and I think you will get ALL the money you need for your D30! :-)
May not be so good in the long term though! ;-)

Your photos look nice.

Yours sincerely,
