I did a search in this forum and couldn't find this discussed, so please excuse a "newbie" if I missed a past thread.

I recently purchased an FZ20 after having used an Olympus C2020Z for several years. The Oly's LCD screen was almost unuseable in bright sunlight and hoped a much newer generation camera (FZ20) would have overcome this problem to a greater degree. I am still disappointed when I am outdoors in bright sun.

Looking at most of the photos in this forum indicates I must be missing something. The rest of you seem to be able to get that sharp focus in your wonderful garden macros and other outdoor shots so you must find the LCD screen highly useable.

I would appreciate any tips to enhance viewing the LCD screen in bright sun. (I find the EVF too small, grainy to be useful for some photos.)

I often wear a ballcap when using the EVF to help shield against the sun. Over the weekend I was crawling around in the yard shooting some macros and had a dark towel draped over my head and the camera so that I could see the LCD better.

Good tip for macros in the yard, but somehow I can't see myself doing this for general shots while "out and about". I tried an LCD hood on my previous camera (OLY C2020Z) but found it cumbersome. One of the reasons I chose the versatile FZ20 is so I have pretty well everything my limited skills can use without dragging along a lot of extras. (Heck even that lens hood seems too much bother to me). I know I have read about various LCD protection films to save LCD screens from scratches, but sort of hoped someone would jump out and say "fitting brand XXX LCD film greatly enhances the image on the LCD in bright sunlight."

Borrowing from birding experience,
where glare can also wash out the
view of your optics,
I wear a hat with a floppy brim on all sides.
I find this better than a baseball cap, since it
helps shield light from all sides.
And I use the EVF exclusively; I find LCD's
annoying and useless for most purposes.
Just wish the EVF had better resolution!

I use the EVF and have an eyecup on it. The eyecup helps me but I wear glasses and I don't know if it helps those who don't. For macros I find I can get more in focused shots using the EVF.

Does this really work? I would think the magnification would make the pixels more obvious. I would appreciate any comments on this before I invest in it.
Thanks, Doug Skopp

I tried one from another co. and that was my opinion. I took the magnifing glass out , tried it a couple days and then put it in the junk drawer.

Sounds like what they use to do when photography was in its early days. Things just keep coming around I guess.

What's the problem using the eye viewer?

I purchased this when my camera was a Sony F505V that did not have an EVF. It is still useful for macro work to see more detail when focusing.

Let us know how you like it.

I am not sure of your statement that bifocal wearers can not use the EVF.
I use it ...Maybe because I have my bifocals set really low on the glasses.
I am not sure.

--Theresa I have worn bifocals for some time and now have gone to a trifocal lens. Have not noticed the effect on EVF and I use it almost exclusively.

I have never tried to adjust the brightness on the LCD but can anyone say if it is an improvement for those having difficulty seeing it. Cheers. Bob
