**Challenge 79 part 2 Dark Side Of The Moon**

My only lens is the kit lens.
Lee, the kit lens is not a bad lens! Being an architect and all, you may find the distortion annoying if you shoot architecture with it. The good news is that the distortion can be corrected for in post-processing. I use a free plug-in software called Panotools - not very intuitive, but I have found the settings that work for correcting the distortion of the kit lens set to 18mm. It really makes a big difference in architectural shots!

Gday Olaf

Are you saying the distortion of the kit lens is because of the wide angle or that the kit lens has distortion therefore not good for architectural shots? The second part of you message leads me to believe you mean the wide angle. I'm still hovering whether to get the kit lens or put the money into something a bit better.

The kit lens has a very pronounced mustache (sp?) distortion in the wide end of the zoom range. I am not talking about key-stoning or falling lines, if that's what you mean?

I noticed we have two entries called breathe. It's also possible that by the end of the challenge there could be other dupes. The voting booth needs unique names to function properly so we'll have to alter and watch out for this.

To get around this, I've added brackets to your asterisk Olaf to make it different from Paul's earlier entry.

Thanks, i wasn't aware that a problem would occur with the voting. I was originally going to encourage only using the song titles as titles for the photographs but thought it might be confusing to view, i didn't realise it would bugger up the voting too. Good job i didn't. Is something as simple as putting the asterix in brackets enough? Olafs titled Breathe works much better with his title than mine so i can go and change mine, i don't mind.

Regards
Paul

I know the voting booth needed unique names at one time. I'm not so sure anymore.

There was a CSLR Challenge so time ago that had two pictures with the exact same name. I added a post to the CSLR Challenge thread about changing the names but that never happened. I watched the voting booth during that challenge and there seemed to be no problem.

Today the voting booth assigns a unique number to each photo as it builds its database. I think that is how it identifies images and tallys votes. I believe that unique names are no longer required by the voting booth.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Now the question of maintaining a unique name for the benefit of the voters is a different question.

knowing a little about database designing i am 100% sure that same name wont create any problem.

just for the clarity, I would suggest that poster please add his/her name after the title or may be just a counter.
for an example: "breath_abstract" OR
if 3d breath entry then..."breath_3"

earlier system was allowed to edit comments (within 30 minutes only) after posting it but now that option seems to be missing from galleries.

it was quite helpful especially to varify some minor mistakes...at least to me.

anyway to get it back? thanks.

PS: I know deleting the comment and entering it again is an alternative :)

One change I'd like to see is reversing the current order of comments, so that the new ones will be down and not up. The current order makes reading them chronologically very unnatural :-( Specially when needing to move pages...

Hello :)

As you folks already know I've only used the 100mm f2.8 macro and kit lens. Been looking for a lense that's wide enough (considering the crop factor if I get a full frame lens) and that has some reach aswell. I had something in mind that's close to the focal length of the s410 powershot

(35mm film equivalent: 36 - 108mm) and an extra bonus would be some more zoom but not at the cost of image quality.

Here is a list of lenses I have considered in no specific order:

Sigma 18-125mm

new Sigma or Tamron 18-200mm

Tamron 28-75mm

Sigma 18-50mm + Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM

Canon EF-S 17-85mm + Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM

Canon EF 17-40mm L + Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM

Here are a bunch of links I collected from the site, sorry if some don't have descriptive headers. I just copied and pasted most to a notepad txt file.

in good light the Tamron 28-75 and Canon 17-85 can be pretty close (stopped down to F11).

In low light the 28-75 lets you take pictures because it is fast, but you will have shallow DOF, which you sometimes want and sometimes don't want.

The 17-85 with its IS lets you take pictures in low light with larger DOF, which you sometimes want and sometimes don't want.

Thanks Olaf, That is something I wanted to do.

Never have been interested in architectural photography. I get enought of it at work. I also never had the right camera.

i dont care much about the order and definitely not to argue...

but i like the current ordering. this way i dont have to scroll down to see latest comments.

most of the time all the comments are independent...if they are related and i am following some on-going conversation mostlyi know whats been said, so would like to read the latest one first.

just my 2 cents...

Happy to be of some help :-) There are plenty of new discussions in the canon slr lens forum. I haven't updated the list in the last week and a half.

The 24-70L is a sweet len, I think Lonnit has that lens. She recently got it and posted some photos

It's a little over my budget. I can't spend more than $600 on a single lens at the moment. Primes are cool, the one I'll surely get someday is the 50mm.

...from the past 5 days:

Though I may rule out the Canon 17-40mm F4L since I probably wouldn't be able to use a flash for many indoor photos. Seems the lens vendors including Canon have been having quality issues. Many Canons need to be sent it for recalibration and there are plenty of stories with the Sigma and Tamron. Some 3rd party lenses also have to be re-chipped. I've decided that if I decide to buy a lens it would be from some place locally or from a very reputable dealer online who has a great return policy, just in case.
