Hello Tom,

Thanks for your info. The main reason to put on UV filter is to protect my camera's Lens in front. I tend to slip when I put on or off the lens cap, and I scare that it could possibly scratches the lens.
regards,
Lim
As far as I know the front 'element' IS a UV filter on the 995

I agree Lim.. Their is no UV filter on the 995, it is just a protection in front of the lens from what I have heard, and cannot be replaced without sending back to the factory. You need a UV filter.. Read this about UV filters and filters in general .. Jerry

No type of camera or lens should be without the protective value of a clear/uv filter, this filter will keep you from the risk of damaging the front element of the cameras lens. All the years we have been selling filters, we have never seen a front lens element that could be cost effectively replaced after the lens element is damaged.
This protective filter should be the best quality that you can afford.
The Multi-Coated filter products will give you the best results.
Filters without any optical coating may reduce the image contrast,
or sharpness due to Un-wanted lens flair

FYI: There is no such thing as intergrated coatings, so call intergrated is a way for a stores to sell you non coated optics at coated prices don't be taken

Filter Coatings and Filter Glass quality does effect image quality, if it didn't, the camera/lens manufactures would make their lenses out of the lower priced glass material and not coat the optics, but they don't, because it does matter
As far as I know the front 'element' IS a UV filter on the 995

The 995 has a built in UV filter ie the front 'element' is optical quality plain UV absorbing glass. Another filter is just going to potentially degrade the image

Hasn't degraded my image and I have extra protection. No problems. Just buy a decent filter. Jerry

UV filter: Primary objective is to protect your EXPENSIVE, hard to replace camera lens from moisture, scratches, fingerprints, etc. Any potential (minor) benfits to the image are secondary, IMHO. Better to clean (micro abrade) a disposable, replaceable shield each time rather than the actual lens.

Robert

p.s.

Try eBay...some sellers will ship internationally although it may not be cost effective for you.

Hi Lim,

I'm in the UK. I bought my 28mm skylight filter from SRB - a small company that specialise in filters and unusual accessories. I don't know if they ship abroad but you could ask. E-mail to [email protected]

Maybe it's just me but I prefer not to add any more glass before the CDD than I have too! I bought into the "you need to protect your lens" message when I first bought my CP990 and quickly realized that you do give up some photons to have it there. Is it noticeable? I think so. I think this is just a personal call. Some are not comfortable with their dexterity or don't want the "take any chances". I prefer to take my chances and not impede the camera's ability to capture photons any more than I have too.

I use a Cir-Porlarizer when needed but it comes off right away if not needed. I have Kenko 8x32, TC-E2 and WC-E3 lenses that I constantly put on and take off. After 11 months and close to 2,000 pics, my treads are fine and have not scratched the primary lens (or it's cover to be precise). I am just really careful when adding lenses by always turning the camera perpendicular to myself at eye-level, reverse turn a bit and secure the lens. I have a nice, hardly used 28mm Marumi multi-coat clear/UV if anyone wants it for a good price.

Lim,

If you have not got the filter yet, I would recommend that you go to Funan Centre in Singapore, and get the filter from a shop named John 3:16.

It is on the 3rd or 4th level, next to the escalator that is near the exit facing Adelphi.

The young man named Samuel is a very helpful guy. I actually bought my CP995 from him when I went back to Singapore last month.

The filter I've got is by Corkin, and it cost me S$20.

Good luck!

Hello Tom,

Thanks for sharing your opinions with us. Actually, both Lens protection and image quality are equally important to me. Do you mind to share some picture taken with and without filter so that I can see the different(choose the worst case)? From here I will know when should I put on or take off the filter.

Lim
