Well, actually, most fireworks tend to shoot two or more shots side-by-side, so actually, shooting in landscape orientation works well. Of course, it does depend on where you are.

side-by-side? 99% of them overlap. just check out the photos posted here and tell me otherwise. see how much blank towards the left/rght edges in a landscape? see how many pics got the stem of the firework mushroom cut?

Like I said, it does depend on where you are. Many fireworks shows now shoot from multiple launchers directions. Around here, they normally shoot at three locations in the sky and at three different altitudes. Like a three by three grid. Normally they shoot so that the fireworks are in the sky side by side, then move to a different altitude and shoot two or three there.
In my case, I was having trouble getting them to fit left to right, not up and down.
