Funny oldpost this, I was watching third rock from the sun the other day and seeing the spinning globe, the thought popped into my head, I will probably never take a picture of the earth from space, but live in hope , I hate travelling (nausea) and the space program is a long way off having us a city on the moon etc only hope is alien technology , warping etc hehe.

The question I was wondering , wonder if anyone on the whole of DP review has took a pic from space? There are quite a few members on here and its slightly conceivable one may have been in a space program , I,ll also allow edge of space eg pics from SR 21 Blackbird and other High altitude Reco planes.

time to hit the searchfunction...cheers...paul

On the dutch site gathering.tweakers.net (general PC hardware software audio fotography and gadgets) in the photography section there are regurarly shots to be seen from cockpit and outside view of airliners . So these can only be from airline pilots. But from space, phew, that's another step up, hehehe. But here on DPreview, well... The closest person I've seen whom you could call a rocket driver is, uhm, Ron Jeremy I guess.

Paul,

I have been on a lot of missions to nearby planets as well as solar systems a couple of time wraps away begining with the Enterprise to more modern ships. I of course have clicked a lot of pics (thru the mail windshield as well as thru remote lenses) but my s7000 doesnt seem to carry the pics when I wake up.

Maybe those damm CF cards are not space certified. But for these minor technical errors I would certainly posted my pics ;-)

Regards,
Rajneesh

I mean the number of airliner pilots are limited compared to the number of truck drivers. And so army and Nasa pilots are even fewer around in number and their right to make shots public is even smaller!

excellent Raj, hope you enjoy many more journeys hehe.
It was an interesting thought though....cheers...paul
ps a transporter like on trek would be ideal .....cheers

it was worth a try...I also used to hold a ham radio license and it is not uncommon for communications to take place, using a handheld packet radio system (APRS) I sent my signal through the international space station once (using a handheld TH-D7e) it was cool to see my callsign routed through the station. A lot of astronauts are hams too I figured they might be camera buffs too....cheers...paul

Not likely. To the edge of space, quite possible. Only an elite few have gone above that 62 mile high barrier. Not long ago I watched live online a civilian spacecraft enter space then glide back down. Not real sure if there's a DPReviewer in that crowd. Makes ya wonder just what kind of camera setup was used.

After reading your post model rocketry came to mind. Some of those have simple camera hookups, though far from space. However, (and there's always a 'however' in life LOL) there are some behemouth model rockets (solid fuel) that do reach 100K feet+ and some of those have camera's in the nose. I'd sacrifice my Fuji for an xD card full of those kinds of pics... not real sure if I've seen a cable release over 20 inches though.

Seeing that fantastic photo Morris put up got me to thinking about something else in the high altitude realm. There's a skydiver I'm familier with who is also an airline pilot, Sheryl Sterns. She's looking to break the free fall record by jumping out of a balloon from 140K feet. Another goal in the jump is to break the sound barrier with just her body by falling at something like 800 mph. She will most likely have a camera setup.

This leads me to this first pic. I just took two shots, not mine, and put them together. This was back in mid September during the whole Hurricane Ivan thing. It's just an extreme skydiver's fantasy LOL The next two I took, minus the satellite insert in the first. That was put in as a reference to my position to the hurricanes reach. Where I'm at is circled in red. The third pic I just turned around and shot the clouds looking north into Alton, IL. Those were shot right around the time I joined the review.

Well I sure went off on a tangent.

It's going to be the rarest of the rare to have an actual astronaut who frequents the dpforum.

I think there are only 9 of the original 12 moon visitors left alive now. I always wondered what it would be like to have done that. To be one of those few guys who can look up at the Moon wherever they are and actually say, "I've been there" . That's a hell of an exclusive club.

I have visited with many people in the amazing State of confusion many times and only once actually had to leave so I would not join them.

BUT SPACE!

Hmmm! I do remember a student that was accused [by a teacher] of committing the high crime of "Taking up space" and I do remember speaking with a young scientist who wanted to go into space she has not made it and she is no longer young.

I think it woud be fantastic to take photos from space.

If you have the 4 to 10 or more [millions of Dollars] they will charge you to go consider it.

Hi Paul.
Sometime this year planning a ballon launch here in OZ .

If all goes well should reach > 34km up (edge of space) It will have digital pics, and live video back to the ground on 1.2ghz (pics will be saved to cf card and downloaded once the balloon is recovered) The balloon will transmit its position at regular intervals via APRS.
At that time I will post pics here and on a website

Hey neighbor, I'm just down the road from you in Collinsville!

It's a small world, after all. (just to stay in the topic of this thread).
