I've had a G6 for about half a year and have been pretty happy with it until it suddenly died yesterday. When I put it in my bag it was working fine, but when I took it out some time later it wouldn't turn on at all - doesn't respond in any way to anything.

I have a few spare batteries which are all charged (I've checked this by recharging them just now) but don't help, and plugging in the USB cable (which normally causes it to start up as I remember) doesn't do anything either.

Any ideas on what I should try doing?

Did you try a reset? If all fails, you can return it under warrenty.

No, but that sounds like it might be what I might need to do. Might sound a dumb question, but does one do such a reset? I don't have my manual with me so can't look it up.

Not a dumb question but in order to reset, the camera has to be on :(

Another idea,is make sure the CF card is really in
and make sure there is good contact between battery terminals and camera.

If all fails, send it back to Canon

It is possible that when the camera was put away in the bag it accidentally switched itself on. In such a case the lens is labouring trying to extend itself (which it can't) and either depletes the battery or burns out the transport mechanism.

This is just a thought, since an accidental switch on in the carry case is moderately common.

Asuming that you did not drop your bag or subject it to adverse conditions (heat, humidity, shock, etc.) it's likely to be corroded or bad battery contacts. Clean them and hope it solves the problem.

Well it does bump itself on annoyingly often, however like I said I tried replacing the battery and even if the lens transport somehow has a problem surely the play mode should still work right?

Well the contacts seem fine, and it would seem strange for them to suddenly stop working like that when there were never any problems with them before. But the bag didn't really suffer any bumps or anything either.

Electronics do stop working suddenly as you described. Just call canon and get it fixed. Most likely it's power supply or something like that so no use trying to fix it yourself

you may want to check this forum on the subject of

G6 and burnt fuse

or something along these lines ..

(I have it in my email .. do you want a copy ?)

Well if its a burnt fuse or something then I'm probably better just sending it back to Canon when I get back home as there won't be much I can do about it myself, but if you do have any information regarding burnt fuses or whatever I'd be interested to see it.

You have new email .. I hope :-)

Thanks. I got it fixed eventually. Apparently it was the power supply.

Still, it would be great if Canon could create some kind of firmware fix to allow one to say lock the camera to prevent it being accidentally turned on when being carried in a bag. Then this problem wouldn't have ever happened.

Some of the Canon cameras have microswitches to make sure the battery/CF compartments are closed. I have heard of the plastic tabs that close these getting broke. Check to make sure your battery and CF door are closing tight.

The micro switch for the CF door of the G6 is towards the top of the compartment, just opposite where CF is molded onto the door. There is a square tab on the door that pushes the switch.

Looks like the switch for the battery door is activated by the longer tab on the hinge side of the door... the one towards that back of the camera.

If either switch is not be activated... or if the switches break, I bet the camera wouldn't power on at all...
