An award for the Dimage7. What kind of crack are they on?

The color space COULD have been a good thing if it were able to be set to be done in camera. Any extra step you have to do to every single one of your images soon becomes a real pain.

Sadly Minolta fell at a few
hurdles, but with their experience one wonders why. Why for
instance do they fit a stiff zoom with a cheap plasticky feel, why
a small grip, why is it hungry for batteries, why cheap build
quality, why does it get hotter than usual and why the 'color
space' necessity?
Cheap plastic feel... Thats the feeling I get with all Minoltas
cameras. They are still great cameras!

The colour space I see as a good thing. Anything better than sRGB
is good!

Heat and battery might be a problem for some, thats true....

However, the cons are not as big as most people try to make of it.
I hope :-)

There is batch processing you know. Just to convert a directory...

If this is the reason someone does not buy this camera they must be looking at the wrong things.

I agree totally that there are other "errors" which prevents people from buying it though...

I am very disapointed in anyone or company or organization that would give an award to an UN-PROVEN camera. Let the consumer beat it up for awhile and see how well it holds up, and if it is liked.

My 2 cents worth.

It's like giving a Ford Pinto a Car a of the year award...

Its the most anticipated but disappointing Digi to date...

I fully agree it's to early for an award. But I disagree completely with people destroing D7 wihout having use it, looking for negativ points and speculating on a lot of potentials problems. Some people seems to be happy to find problems. There are also very positiv revews. In my opinion there is much more bad noise in this forum than in D7.Without le noise, the forum is excellent and I. Phil's review is excellent
Sorry for my english

Just the simple fact that you would have to do allot of post processing on the photos is more than enough for me to discount this camera. Futhermore the fact that it was touted as being some great camera was just the icing on the cake... Or was it the nail in the coffin?

I do not know if the award is based purely on camera specification
or on actual experience of camera use. I suspect that it is
largely the former since production DiMAGE 7s have only just
appeared for people to actually use. In which case, in my opinion,
the award is entirely justified -- in terms of its specification
the D7 is almost the perfect digital camera. In this respect it
beats hollow any other digital camera in its price range:
  • Highest resolution.
  • Most capable lens (very high quality optics with remarkably
little distortion and CA) with one of the widest zoom ranges;
excellent wide-angle, very good telephoto and good macro
capabilities.
  • Lots of focusing and exposure options, with an excellent aperture
range and shutter speed range.
  • Lots of in-camera control - colour saturation, sharpening,
contrast, etc.
  • Good ergonomics - lots of external controls without resorting to
multi-level menus.
  • Control of zoom and manual focussing via lens rings -- more
responsive and intuitive than stupid fiddly little buttons.
  • Best EVF in any digital camera (better colours, faster, higher
resolution than any other, also tiltable).
  • Lots of other design pluses, such as proper lens thread, metal
tripod mount, CompactFlash/MicroDrive, etc etc.

On paper the D7 is an absolute winner and whoever put together its
specification deserves an award. Unfortunately Minolta seem to
have screwed up on the actual implementation of the specification
-- poor (or, to be more generous, whacky) aesthetics, not the best
build quality, high power consumption and (presumably related) heat
generation, and auto-focus problems.

I am not familiar with the Ford Pinto (I guess here in the UK it
goes under a different name), but I would imagine that the
difference between the Ford Pinto and the D7 is that the former is
crap both in terms of its specification and its actual usage,
whereas the D7 has an unbeatable specification (in its price range)
but in actual usage ... well, it appears to have some significant
shortcomings.

Terry.

(Buying intentions in the next ten days: Minolta DiMAGE 7 - 35%
chance; Olympus E-10 - 35% chance; Canon EOS D30 - 15% chance; no
purchase & stick with my current Oly C2100 for longer - 15%
chance!!!!)
Terry in the U.K.,

I was also contemplating the purchase of a Dimage 7 but was waiting for Phil's review. It seems I'll keep on waiting. Makes me wonder about the amount of sway Phil has over the industry as far as sales of digicams. With regards to your closing comment on your choices for your next camera, I've also got the 2100z and I'll definately be hanging on to it. (guess I'll be waiting until they they come up with the 4.1 mp Oly 4100z!)

WOW so many band wagon jumpers just like a sports team you all listen to one review and bang you all freak out. This is the first review, I would wait till there is more reviews out there before you all jump to conclusions!!
It can't be the best and the worst at the same time.
There are a very few people who get this digicam, but everybody
knows what a beautiful cam it is, and who read the last review
knows how terrible it is in about 3 weeks.

??? What a (p)review can do ???

Power to the reviewers...

I didnt know this was about a review... I thought it was to do with giving a camera an award before it even hit the streets. Larry G

Sorry your Crack dealing I mean your Minolta salesman had to feed you all that hype about a camera that fell severly short of what it was tring to be!

Hmmm maybe this is why the D7 is only being compared to cameras not in the typical "pro or prosumer markets"
