I going to get a 300 L lens with IS and USM. I have 2 alt.;Canon 300/2.8 or Canon 300/4. Two questions;
Is there a visable different in sharpness?

What about image quality and AF respons when I add a 1,4 TC-which lens works best with this set up?

Thank´s for your support.

Hi

I have both these lenses and they are incredibly sharp but the 300F2.8L IS is in another league. It is very sharp at every aperture including wide open (2.8) and the creamy smooth aut of focus backgrounds that you can achieve are awesome.

The IS on the F2.8 is also the newer of the 2 lenses.

As far as the teleconverters go (Canon teleconverters), the F4 works well with the 1.4, the F2.8 works superbly with the 1.4x, the 2x and with both stacked.

Autofocus is still possible (on both lenses) with the 1.4x on all camera bodies.

the 300F4 looses autofocus with the 2x on all but the 1 series cameras, the F2.8 will still autofocus with all bodies.

And the 300F2.8 will still allow autofocus with both converters stacked on the 1 series cameras (centre point only).

Autofocus speed with the teleconverters does slow up a touch with the F4, but the F2.8 is still instant at locking on to subjects and tracking fast moving opjects.

One thing that you must already know if you are considering both lenses is the extra size and weight of the F2.8. It is certainly handholdable with the 1.4x but a monopod is recommended for long shoots.

If you can justify the cost of the F2.8 you will be purchasing one of the best, if not the best, lens that Canon makes.

I will never sell mine.

Best wishes

Colin.

I was doing a search for the sharpest of the Canon lenses and the 2.8 was number 1 on some lists, and second to the 200 F1.8 on other lists.

The 300 mm F2,8 IS is the sharpest with the 500 mm F4 IS . They are even sharper in the center than the mythic 200 mm F1,8. But the 200 mm was the sharpest lens at 1,8 of the world.

I love the crop factor at the long end, I hate it in the wide range

yes very visible difference. I owned 2 300mm F4 and did not like them much. they were not very sharp wide open and had to be stopped down to F8. the 300mm F2.8 L is in another league completely but it is much more expensive and bigger and heavier.

definitly go with teh F2.8 if you want to add a TC.

I bought the 300/4L without IS today. Very sharp although the lens outside was in moderate shape. I am just curious, should a lens hood be included on this lens? I was told differently by the shopkeeper, i feel slightly fooled here... thanks for any response!

This varies by copies...I've seen quiet a few of the 300/4 IS that were very sharp wide-open. You mus have rec'd some bad copies. The 300/4 IS is a top quality lens owned by many.

Hi,

I had a 300 f4 IS few years ago and did not liked it for the same reasons.

I switched for a 100-400 that I found sharper and more versatile.

I have recently bought a 300 Is 2.8 and I sold my 100-400...

With the Canon series II converts stacked the camera only see the 1.4xII extender. The 300f/2.8L IS with the 1.4xII and 2xII will and does auto focus on both the 10D and 20D....no pin taping required. It does hunt some if the target is low in contrast.

ah ok, I did not know the camera could only see one tc.

how is the focusing speed with that stack?

Speed is not bad exactly. In good light with a high contrast target it snaps right in but if light is less than good or the target is a little low in contrast it tends to hunt some...hunt isn't even the right word...it will stutter until it locks.

If you can afford it without any second thoughts, go for it and don't look back. Unbelievable lens

Not true at all. The 300 f/4L IS is very sharp and even with a 1.4x TC produces excellent results. In fact it is sharper than a 100-400 and only just behind a 400 f/5.6L. The 300 f/2.8L IS is of course sharper again and seems to lose nothing with a 1.4x TC and produces very good results with a 2x TC.

Some have rated the 300 f/2.8L IS the sharpest Canon ever with the 200 f/1.8, 400 f/2.8 very very close.

There should be a sliding lens hood built into the lens itself. Doesn't the section around the front lens element slide forward?

Cheers,
