Well, I've just about decided to buy an E-10. Its a big purchase for a mostly broke college student, but I enjoy photography and its time to move on up from my dated (but still enjoyable) C2020. I've been reading these posts for a while now about various problems with E-10's out of the box. I've got a couple questions on this... first off. The manual focus problem... Manual focus on the lens is one of the major reasons I want the E-10, but I've been reading about manual focus problems quite a bit on here lately. Strange as it may seem, I cannot figure out what exactley the problem is. I've surmised it is something to do with a discrepancy between the AF and MF, but haven't found a post that explains exactley what the problem is and how to tell if your camera has it. Also, dead and hot pixels. I know what they are, my C2020 has a couple after 14months of shooting but what is the accepted test for hot/dead pixels on the E-10. Basically, I want to know what I should do with the camera out of the box when I get mine in the mail to assure that the camera is fine to begin with. Thanks for any help, I look forward to reading the responses.

Remembering back to my starving student days and the tight cash flow, don't be tempted to cheap out and buy a gray market camera (presume you're in the U.S.). Alos, be sure you buy from a vendor with a good return policy in case you need to make an exchange.

The manual focus test was described in an earlier post. The quick way to test for hot pixels is, lens cap on, camera in manual mode, take increasingly longer exposures. The images will be black, any hot pixels red. I found one hot pixel at 2 second exposure and can live with it since the camera is fine in other respects.

This problem has been brought up by some here. Most I presume, including myself have not experienced this. My MF worked perfect after fiddling with the diopter.

This link will provide you with a utility for testing

Hot pixels under long exposures should be expected. Dead pixels are another story. For me, 4 months and all is fine w/ no dead pixels (fingers crossed and knocking on wood)

Don't worry about all this stuff. If you have made up your mind that this is the camera for you buy it from a reputable dealer with a no questions asked return policy. If you have problems (and chances are most likely you won't) return/exchange it for another. You won't be disappointed.

Hi Brad, and congrats on the decision. The other posters on this thread said it best, but just to add my 2 cents.
  1. 1: DON'T skimp and buy a grey market camera.
  2. 2: The MF problems are pretty rare. It's the classic situation; folks with no problem don't run around shouting "I don't have any problems!!!!", but the folks with problems are usually pretty vocal (and rightly so). So yes, you could get a camera with a problem, but chances are greater that you won't.
Good luck!

I was buying my E-10 as an "open box" item (someone returned it after Christmas without even opening SM card and batteries and saving me $300 off Best Buy's price of $1999). So salesmen let me play and test my camera. I brought CF card with me, made close cap shots, played with AF and MF. I didn't catch my MF problem back then - it's only 1/2-3/4 inch off. I reviewed my test shots, was blown away with the quality of pics, came back and bought the camera. I wish I knew more about MF problem back then.

If you can convince your dealer to let you try your camera before you buy it, it'll save you a lot of time, money and headache. Get CF card and reader BEFORE you buy the camera.
