I plan on getting a Rollbar and an SB-28 flash for my new Nikon 995, But am a bit worried about the weight/size of the 28. How difficult is handling the 995 attatched to a Rollbar/SB-28 setup? I would be using this setup to get candid pictures at parties, etc and I dont want this setup to be too bulky, slowing me down. I know the SB-22 is lighter but my freind is offering me his backup SB-28 for a great deal. So does anyone have any experience with this setup?

SB-28 weight without batteries (it takes 4 AA's) is 11.3 oz.. I use my SB28 with a Rollbar. Depends on your definition of "bulky" - you certainly won't be slipping this setup into your shirt pocket!!! Particularly if you attach some sort of diffuser like a LumiQuest which will add to the overall size/bulk of the setup (which you'll probably want to do to prevent blowouts - especially for closer shots). You won't exactly blend into the crowd with this setup - in fact, it will probably be quite a conversation piece. The SB-28 will allow you to take pictures from across the room though. hth

You can check out the Rollbar homepage for a picture of the 995
attached to the Rollbar with a Nikon flash also attached:

I have the 990 attached to the Rollbar with the SB-22s and can attest
that it is a quite manageable arrangement-not too bulky or unwieldy.

Hi,

To see a complete list of all the flash brackets for the 990 & 995 see this page... http://www.rosensaft.com/ezra/cp_brackets.htm

If you want some general info on flash units, see this page... http://www.rosensaft.com/ezra/cp_flashes.htm

If you want a very compact, minimal bulk flash bracket that you can even use one-handed with ease you should have a look at the Magic Bracket,
http://www.magicbracket.com

I actually have designed and am producing the Magic Bracket, so perhapse I am a little biased, but I think the Magic Bracket is the most compact and highly functional (& best priced) bracket that I have seen available.

I also know that we are not meant to advertise/promote our own products on this forum but at this stage you wouldn't know that the Magic Bracket is available so I thought I should let you know, I do also use the Magic Bracket as a consumer, so I hope I don't offend anyone with this post. :-)

Anyway... have a look at the 'Specs' page at
http://www.magicbracket.com/magic_bracket.htm
for all the info and photos and see what you think.

Johntb,

I have a 990+Rollbar+SB-28DX+Lumiquest Ultrasoft.

1st comment on the Rollbar: I wish the bracket was made of a sturdier material. With the SB-28dx on it,the top arm bounces just a little. That is not to say it is a bad bracket. The fact that the screw that holds in the hot shoe is always coming loose is a little discouraging. But other than those two issues the design is great.

2nd comment on the SB-28(DX): I would much rather have a heavier, brighter flash that I can tone down vs a lighter flash that may not be bright enough and I can't do anything about. My philosophy is I would rather buy too much than not enough.

3rd comment on the Lumiquest Ultrasoft: Buy the pocket bouncer with the accessory kit.

Don't worry about the weight, still with everything attached, it weighs less than a D1 without the batteries.

Have a look at the Magic Bracket, http://www.magicbracket.com it doesn't bounce or bend... it can't... due to its unique design.

I would strongly agree... I have just bought the Sunpak PZ-5000, even higher Guide Number than the SB-28! Works very well, although it is a large unit I prefer the high power for when you need it.

James,

In your 3rd comment below you recommend the Pocket Bouncer with the accessory kit over the Ultrasoft. Does the PocketBouncer with the Frosted Diffusion Screen from the accessory kit essentially perform the same as the Ultrasoft? I'm currently debating between the Pocket Bouncer, the Ultrasoft, and Sto-Fen's Omnibounce and can't make up my mind.

Chris

Johnb:

Here is a pic of my Rollbar with the SB28 and an inexpensive Westcott Micro Apollo diffuser. I put it on a tripod for the pic.

It is not a 'pocket setup' but it will take a picture of a whole big room. The weight of the SB28 does make for a little bounce but that is true of any bracket where a heavy flash is held up above the camera. The Rollbar is made from aircraft aluminum and the size and relative flexibility is a trade-off to the overall weight of the bracket. It didn't bother me on my very expensive Stroboframe and it doesn't bother me here.

Here's a picture of a couple of hams I took with this setup from about 3 feet away (everything pointed right at them). Notice, no blowout and no redeye. I love it.

I use a StroboFrame bracket...I've seen a picture of Rollbar and it does look thin. I can tell you there is no bounce with the StroboFrame. However, you have to use an SC-18 cord with the StroboFrame as it's a little bit bigger. The bonus is that it has a rotating arm and the flash is a bit higher than the Rollbar which reduces redeye even more.

Maybe I have been a little too rough on my Stroboframe. I used it for several years with some pretty heavy strobes and cameras on it. It not only bounced, but it swayed from side to side a little too. The flip joint was also pretty loose. But like I said before, movement of the speedlight doesn't affect the pictures. It is camera movement you want to avoid. HTH. PatiO.

Chris,

I am not 100% but I would assume so....the accessory Frosted Diffusion screen looks very similar to the Ultrasoft.

You just have more versatility I think...

I used the SB-28 with the strobo flip frame with my 990. The weight could not have been to bad as the guy that stole my outfit had no trouble running away across the airport parking lot.

The results were great but you do not blend in. My girlfriend hated using the setup as everyone would think she was some kind of pro. (not that kind). It was a great flash but overkill for 990 and 995
