I'm familiar with smugmug. I don't know if it's the best for your needs, but can at least tell you what it can/can't do that you've asked for.
For "secure log in", I'm not sure exactly what you are tyring to do, but smugmug galleries can each have their own password so you could create a gallery for an event, give it a unique password and then give out the URL and the password for the gallery only to the folks that you want into that gallery.
As for image protection, you can prevent the display of the original high-res version on smugmug (e.g. display only web sizes), but still have smugmug configured so that the high-res version is used for prints.
For ease of navigation, I'm not sure what you need. Smugmug galleries are very self explanatory for how to browse within the gallery and you have a lot of different gallery styles to choose from depending upon the type of event and the look you want.
