If what I've learned from my searches is correct, the two best types of UV filters are B+W MRC and Hoya SHMC. I'm currently contemplating filters to help protect a 24-70L and 70-200IS...would these be the correct filters for those?

Are there any advantages/disadvantages between these? (e.g. any reason the Hoya is twenty bucks more?)

Also, would this be a good one for the 10-22EFS?

Hi

Yes what you did is exactly right. Nevertheless the HOYA that you found is the Pro-1 SHMC Version. You can also consider the following one also

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=94134&is=REG
which is cheaper. It's also SHMC.

Now I have the one that I mentioned and the BW MRC and I can tell the following different btw HOYA and BW
  • Ring Material difference
  • Harder to clean the HOYA !!! BW is easy to clean
Hope this helps

For your 10-22mm you don't need the WA lens. As there is a 1.6x factor,

the FOV of the lens is 16mm-35mm and therefore there is no need for a Slim version.

Best

Hi Vadim,

I'm looking for a filter on my new 24-70L (got it yesterday) also.

The salesperson recommend the slim version because he considered the 24mm a wideangle, but I understand from your message that a slim version will not be needed?

Although I'm using it on a 1.6x crop body now, I don't want the filter to show on a full frame body neither.

B+W 77mm MRC would be good then?

Couple questions of clarification...

What makes the Pro version of the Hoya more expensive?

Why exactly is the BW easier to clean than the Hoya? Is it the material it's made out of, coatings, or what?

And are you saying that I can just get three regular 77mm UV filters for all three of those lenses I mentioned (10-22EFS, 24-70L, 70-200IS)?

Thanks again!!!

Elja,
on a 24-70L with a 1.6x camera or even 1.3 you don't need the slim version

I am using a non-slim version of the HOYA 77mm on my 17-40L (10D body)
and it works perfectlty.

The reasons why he wants to sell you the slim version might be as follow
1° he doesn't know what he is talking about
2° He wants to sell you something more expensive !!!!

to summarize, Yes B+W 77mm MRC would be good then!!

Coatings I guess. the material is the same (ie Glass). BW is really easier to clean

Hi,

I just bought two filters along with the 24-70 L.

I bought the slim versions of the B+W MRC UV Haze and circular polarizer filters. Although slim filter's are not required, I was hoping to use these also with the ultra wide lens I hope to buy in future.

I found the following reviews very helpful and bought the filters based on these. The reviewer recommends Heliopan and B+W.

Hope this helps.

http://www.2filter.com . $38 for 77mm SHMC. Make sure you
add the item to cart for the actual cost to show up

I think they are running free shipping now. I bought
a few times from them without any problems.

BTW, I am not connected with them.

because if there is a thread only on 1 side, you won't be able to attach the front cap on the filter. ie you will have to remove the filter everytime you will want to attach the front cap on it!!

Vadim

But I would assume that most slim filters come with a special cap then, or at least the B+W MRC 77mm slim does.

I bought a Hoya S-HMC which is only threaded on one side. > :-/ Guess who isn't buying Hoya anymore? :P B+W seems like a good brand and i hear good stuff about Tiffen too.

...do the regular lens caps fit with those filters?
