Hi,

has anyone any experiences with the Eagleeye 5x telephoto lens on a G1 ( http://www.eagleeyeuk.com )? Does it work? Is there any vignetting? Can we use the full zoom range of the G1?
Thanx Mike

Recommend you do a forum search, but as I recall, vignetting is a problem, even at full zoom. One or two people on the forum have one, so perhaps they'll give you a better reply.

Mike,

I did a lot of research on this topic . Take my word for it,but the eagle eye just is not something that can be used for G1. Even at full zoom there is severe vignetting, so you may as well drop this idea.

However tiffen 2x does a good enough job and so does the canon 1.5x. If you need more zoom than these then perhaps you should wait till some one makes a good lens with 43mm dia at least

Mike,

I got the eagle eye and am not too happy with it.
I wanted a lens to zoom in at about 30 - 50 feet - typically at a stage.
A 2x cannot do it and neither can the EE.

I went to the top of Carew Tower (Cincinanti, OH) one of the tallest if not the tallest skyscsraper - 50 stories high and tried to shoot the new football stadium - pretty lousy shots and had to attach a 0.48x wide angle to the EE to get some clarity. The images are good when it vigenettes - extremely sharp. Getting rid of the vigenetting reduces the sharpness.

The images are "stuck" on the CF as Zb stopped accessing the USB port and I have to get a CF reader.
I will have to do some more testing to find out it's strengths.
Perhaps when I post the images yoy can decide.

However EE's service is exellent - answer emails within 24 hours and very precise answers, prompt shipping from UK and the item was well packed.

Hi Mike,

forget the eagleeye - you would have to use full zoom combined with 2x digital zoom to avoid vignetting :-(

If you want a good tele for the G1 with good optics, you only have the choice between the Olympus B-300 (hard to get), 1.7x, 55mm thread or the Canon TC-DC58, 1.5x, 58mm thread - which gives you a vignetting free zoom range between 96-153mm - this range would be smaller on the B-300. All other lenses can only be used at full zoom to avoid vignetting.

The Tiffen Megaplus 2x might be an option too, but you'll get a bit vignetting in the corners even at full zoom.

BTW - I got the TC-DC58 and like it - it's not so heavy and I like the zoom range discribed above. Examples can be found in my galleries:
