I like the sharpening technique and recently I've been using selective sharpening but the one thing I do like is sharp clear eyes.
I find that the quality of eyes can define the rest of the image.

Does this action work better for say RAW or zero in-camera sharpening?

Yo.
I put together a small photoshop action (OmniEdgeSharpen) which
only sharpens the edges of the pic with USM instead of the whole
picture. This results in less noise.

I use it to batch-sharpen whole folders.
Anyway, here it is if you like it:
http://hem.bredband.net/content/canon/actions/omniedgesharpen.htm

If you don't approve of my choice of USM (134, 0.7) you can always
change the action to your liking.

Shooting RAW or with no sharpening allows you to sharpen as the last step of the workflow.

Thanks for the action I tried it and it looks great. I would like to know how to make the adjustments to see what the differences would be like. I almost always sharpen with 20, 50, 0 and would love to have an aciton to use.

Thanks again,
Yo.

You can use actions with elements - I think the author must limit the features they use but there are actions published for elements 2.

Check out this site which has lots of downloads - I've tried Erick Nguyen's watercolor action in elements, with decent results, it even lets you use curves although once you've changed them you can't go back and adjust.

I remember reading in this forum before that there is a plugin
which you can instal into Elements which will let you use actions.
Don't recall what it is called though. Do a search through the
forums or on google and you should be able to find it.

... I get an error about the Alpha channel since I'm using a Swedish version of Photoshop CS. The channel is then called "Alfa 1" instead of the ph-spelling. Any way it's possible to fix easy?

Thanks a lot for a very generous contribution! I've just played around with it and got some great results. One question though: Am I right that this action should only be applied once and at the very end of the image editing process? (When applying it to the original and then resizing an image and re-applying it to the edited smaller version it looked very flat & bland...) Thanks again,
Hans

Well I just installed it. I hit the play button and I think it worked. I was expecting a bunch of options to pop up like when I do actions for frames but nothing came up. Just to see if it worked I did "edit/step backward" and it is now giving me a really cool pencil sketch outline of the photo. Not only did this prove the action did work it showed me a cool way to make a different looking picture too!

Very cool,
Thanx's

hmm. I guess you could just delete the "set selection" and "delete current channel" actions at the end of the list. The only thing these 2 last actions do is to remove the alpha channel that i used to decide what to sharpen.
The action will work anyway, but the pic will have an extra alpha channel.

OR you could manually delete the "alfa 1" channel

OR You could "record" new actions to the end of the list so that your swedish version works.

Run the orig. action
When error message comes, halt
Remove the actions I mentioned
hit record.
choose "alfa 1"
"ta bort"
end record

typ.

I don't have the swedish version or I could do it for you.

re-download the action. Your wish just may have come true :)

You can always modify the action further by deleting the USM part and adding your own preferred USM at the same place.

Please forgive my ignorance but what is the difference between the action and:

Just wanted to know if there was some other important steps. I'll fix the last stuff myself no problem. I liked the result btw! :-)

My action does not choose the same "edges" in the same way.
Default "Sharpen edges" is also a bit smoother.

And i like to change the USM manually, so I just change the USM part of the action.
Try both, and compare. Sometimes the normal "Sharpen edges" might be better.

That will have to be a matter of taste. I use it at the end.
