I have S30, G3, 300D and now 350XT. All have worked perfectly straight out of the box and continue to do so. But I have bought them over the counter and checked them out first.
However I don't assume because all mine worked ok that every one will work ok. This forum had lots of reports of shutter failure on the 300D, the 20D forum had endless cases of lockups and banding, etc., etc.
Perhaps I haven't been paying attention, but this is the first complaint about the XT's quality control I've seen, amidst dozens of posts from very happy (not to say ecstatic!) XT owners.

--Someone, sometime, is going to get a box with everything screwed
up. It just looks like your the lucky one. Using one data point
to make a decision would be foolish for anyone on this board.
Furthermore, people are WAY more likely to post if they have a
problem than if everything shows up working just fine. Using the
stories posted on these boards may give some insight but they have
little baring on the true probability of getting a good/bad camera.
