Wow! Those of you who already have your D1x should be grateful! I just got off the phone with Mike Bard at Newtonville Camera, and he told me that there are 85 names ahead of mine on his list!

Why's that Lance. I put my name down on a list at the beginning of March, other folk even before that - I hadn't even seen any images (nobody had at that point). In fact we were labelled as fools and idiots by some folk (who are now whining about not being very high up on their list and that it will be ages before they get their cameras).

Joyful, very much so, but grateful, no I don't think this is perhaps the right adjective.

Ahh, Carol,

You must forgive those of us who say we speak English, but actually speak American! Point well taken.

Unfortunately, back in March I was not financially able to even think about putting out the money for the D1x. I felt that it would be unfair to others if I put my name on a list when I wasn't sure if I could actually purchase the camera when it came in.

I have lusted after the D1 series since it was first introduced. I vicariously lived through the magenta woes, etc., all the time wishing I could have those problems.

Now, finally, I am able to make the plunge. I'm getting a D1x with:

SB28DX Flash
Extra Battery
1 gig Microdrive
256 MB CF II
28-70mm f/2.8D
60mm f/2.8 macro
80-200mm f/2.8 AF-ED

I'm ecstatic to be able to join the ranks of D1x owners, and again, Carol, please forgive my use of the word "grateful."

Lance,

Great package! You may just want to add an ac adapter to that list. That is the only way you'll be able to clean the ccd/filter.

Kevin,

Thanks for the advice. Dust is a big concern for me because I live in a VERY windy area with a great deal of construction. I need to review all the info on cleaning the ccd. I know that Stan, Stanton, Uwe, and others contributed a great deal of info when the D1 first appeared.

I thought I read somewhere that you can set the camera to BULB to clean the ccd.

This is so cool. Now I can worry about cleaning the dust off my D1x ccd. That beats the heck outta not having a D1x! I can't wait!

Lance,

Thats the good news. It's nice having such problems :) Everytime I read about D1x waitlists it just makes me want to reach over and kiss mine :-)

I believe in bulb mode you have have to keep the shutter depressed. I think I remember reading some people setting the shutter to 30 seconds (the max before bulb) and doing it that way. I think I'll follow the manual. Maybe after I get the hang of it I will get more creative. I'm going to try cleaning mine for the first time this weekend. I've been playing with my 80-400vr with a new kenko 2x teleconverter and having a lot of fun with it.

Enjoy,

Kevin

Hey Kevin,

I should probably start a new post, but how do you like the 80-400VR??? Is it worth the $$$? I do mostly product and portrait work, so I don't really need 400mm for work.

I do, however, plan to use the D1x for pleasure too, so I need a long lens of some sort. That's why I went with the 80-200mm.

I'm one of the guys who doesn't look at the 1.5x multiplier as getting a longer lens. My 80-200mm will give me 200mm max, just less viewing area (angle of view :o)). 80-400mm would REALLY give me some options to explore.

I haven't talked to anyone who owns the VR yet. Do you use it for work? Are you happy with it?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

TIA,

L

I love the 80-400 VR ... used it for head shots at an outdoor event. Handheld... full frame faces, soft backgrounds thanks to dof.

I don't think you would regret owning one.

Hi Lance,

I love the lens! It is really worth every penny. There is a lot of good info here...
http://www.photographyreview.com/reviews/35mm_zoom_lenses/product_6040.asp

I was looking at the 80-200 but it didn't seem that much more money to get the VR which got me to 400mm. The only problem with the 80-400 is finding them in stock. I got lucky at Ritzcamera.com. Here is one of my favorite shots with it at a full 400mm. My son running the 50 yard dash. He was about 25 yards into the race. I was way up in the stands.

This is another one of my daughter at our community easter egg hunt. Also at the full 400mm.

Here is one of the first pictures I took when I got the lens. I believe it was also at 400mm but I don't have the shooting information for it.

Ask me again if it's worth it :) I wouldn't trade these 3 shots for anything... The only drawback to the lens is the slow focusing. Some times I will manually focus (which is easy to do on the lens). I have thought about using the 80-200 with a 2x teleconverter. But you lose the VR capability which is awesome in and of itself. Plus you would then have a 160-400mm lens not 80-400.

Here's one with the 80-400 with the kenko 2x converter. So this was really 800mm.

O.k. O.k. the last one, I promise...:)

This is one of those Red Lights at the top of a Radio Tower. Again, 400mm with the 2x (So 800mm).

Thanks,

Kevin

Hey Kevin,

All I can say is "WOW"! The shots of your kids were very strong selling points. I've never really gone into the truly telephoto lenses because they were either slow and heavy, or moderately slow and expensive! I was using a 70-150mm with a 2x converter for 20 years.

The thing I really like about the 80-200 is its speed (aperture AND focusing). That being said, the hair in both your son's and daughter's pictures showed excellent detail at 400mm, so apparently focusing is not much of an issue.

Damn, why is it that all this good advice keeps driving the cost up! Mike Bard is going to love me (or hate me...).

Thanks for the Pix, Kevin!

Lance,

Thanks for your nice comments. If you do get the 80-400 be sure to post some pics :)

I just placed my order for an 80-400VR with Newtonville Camera (Mike Bard) this morning - it will be shipped on Monday. If you're having trouble finding this lens, Mike indicated he currently has 10 in stock.

Steve,

Thanks for the info. I'm actually not having problems finding the lenses. Mike said he had everything I want in stock....err, except for the camera. Great guy that he is, Mike thought that it would be cruel and unusual to receive all the cool lenses and accessories without a camera to put them on. He's right!

So I wait....

I don't know if this was covered, but the ccd will still be charged in the bulb mode, and it will attract dust. With the ac adaptor it will not be charged.

Hi Lance,

One last thing...those 2 shots of the kids were with the D1! I can't wait to compare that to the detail I'll get from my D1x!

Mike,

Thanks for that bit of info! I honestly thought that I could use Bulb setting to clean the ccd. While possible, obviously not a good plan. So much to think about, so much to do. Thank goodness for this forum(and others).

Thanx again Mike!

Hello,

I just did my first CCD clean over the weekend. Interesting...I bought a "Coleman Rechargeable Inflater" that blows a good stream of air out the nozzle and the intake is easy to put a filter over. It didn't seem to have the air power to get the dust off though. Then I grabbed a can of compressed air (I know, I know don't start :) and very, very gently started using it. It worked much better than the other and it makes me wonder just how "sticky" are these dust particles? They sure don't seem to want to come off easily. I'll still try the first method to get as much as I can and resort to compressed air only when necessary. I do recall a post that says you can get compressed air in a can without the propellant in it. I need to look into that further. But all is clean for now :)

Thanks,

Kevin
