OK, here's thedeal. I paid ectra and got an S85 from Japan. I still have one day on my S75 so I quickly did some identical shots with both cameras. I am not a professional photographer but have a background in video and so am fairly sensitive to camera issues in general. My very unscientific quick tests led me to the following conclusions:
1. These two cameras are VERY similar. They are more alike than different. I already really like the S75 so like the S85 even more. The colors and look pf the pics are quick comparable.
2. The reds and greens do appear to me to be slightly better on the S85 in some but not all circumstances.
3. There seems to be a little less noise on the S85 pictures.
4. The S85 pictures are slightly but clearly sharper. That is the extra resolution DOES make a difference. It is noticable but it is not overwhelmingly different than the S75. This is as displayed on an Apple 22" cinema Display. I haven't printed anything so don't know how it will carry over.
5. The flash seems more controlled on the S85. I always had to set the S75 to low but the S85 seems a bit more accurate.
5. Here's the suprising thing and it may be just do to the particular conditions but it seemed to me that the auto functions on the S85 performed better. Both focus and exposure seemed more accurate. Now this may be due to the fact that I was holding one camera in each hand and shooting off identical shots. Maybe the S75 had the weaker hand or something but the focus appeared more accurate (this is in addition to the resolution sharpness)
Well thats my very hasty comparision but it's something. I know people will want me to post the pics but I have never done so and honestly don't know how. I ended up paying about $150 more for the S85 because of the trip from Japan but to me it is worth it. Whether or not it will be to other people will depend on individual circumstances. I think I would be quite happy with either.
