After scanning a bunch of posts on various forums, talking with Nikon support, and some experimentation I have be able to get the GPS interface to work with several small GPSs.

If there is enough interest, I will put up a page with pictures and instructions for doing this. It is worthwhile if location is important.

I have also come up with a way to strap the GPS to the camera strap so it is more or less unobtrusive.

I for one am very interested in learning what you have discovered about using GPSs with the D1x.

Hi Stephen,

I got mine working with the eTrex summit today also. What are you using to dispay the EXIF info from the NEF?

I want to check whether the compass bearing has been embedded in the image... (not looking too hopeful since the bearing isn't included in the preview screen)

Cheers

The information comes up on the preview screen and in Nikon View 4.x

I am finishing an extractor I wrote in Java to retrieve it from the NEF.

I'm using an eTrex Vista. I've tried all the eTrex models as well as the eMap.

A few more interested persons and I'll put up a page with more information.

I'd be interesting in your page about the GPS cable. I have a Garmin III+ and eMAP.

Count me in too. I have also have a Vista that I want to connect. I use the Vista on my bike using a handlebar adapter, it shouldn't take rocket science to adapt it to the accessory shoe of the D1x.

Stephen,

I've got a Garmin GPS 12 XL, and would love to know if it will work with the D1X. If not, I'm willing to fork out for the eTrex. Since I don't need info on altitude, will the base model eTrex work???

TIA,
Lance

After much searching and some help from Nikon, I too was able to get the GPS function working on the D1x. And, I am also using a Garmin 12XL.

Hi Jason!

How'd you do it? I'm not real handy with a soldering iron (except for lighting cigars and burning workbenches...), but I'm willing to try.

Do you find the 12 XL cumbersome along with the D1x? The little eTrex is so cool looking that I'd love to have a reason to buy one. Only problem is that I am totally dedicated to my 12XL. It has literally saved my life.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
