My D70 died...warranty expires TODAY!

I received a response from Nikon via email today. They told me to send it in to Torrance, but that if there was a charge to be made, they'd let me know...in other words, I'm not so sure they'll cover the repairs.

Anyway, I also went to my local Ritz store today, and they said that their repairs take a minimum of EIGHT weeks...needless to say, I'm heading over to Torrance tomorrow.

Check this out...the Ritz employee told me that if I accidentally destroyed my camera, they would replace it with a D70 successor (if it was available on the market).

I asked if she was serious, and she replied, "Go for it!" LOL

... thank goodness they've decided to cover it under warranty :-)
Conspiracy Theory - I beginning to think this is all a little plot
by Nikon on to force early D70 owners to send the D70s back to
their master. The pattern is a little too consistent. D70s failing
just around the time when the warranty expires.

So we'll know what really happened when you "accidentally" drop your D70 under the wheels of a moving truck when the D80 (or whatever) ships. :)

I remember we both being ones who receive early batch D70. My D70 reached 10k early this year (though I'll shot 3k at most in a year before I got it) and I haven't encountered your problem. But maybe it's because my camera has been serviced (stuck pixels).

When it's still under warranty, I think it's a good idea to have Nikon does the service instead of 3rd party outfits (contracted by Ritz). Best of luck! Hope you get a properly repaired D70 in no time.

I googled the problem, and I guess it's somewhat of a common
problem among early production models.

The camera will not "power up," and the memory card lamp keeps
flashing.

Pressing the "menu" or "review" buttons brings the LCD on, but only
for a split second.

Fortunately, I have the Ritz ESP extended warranty service, but I
kinda want to send it into Nikon and just have them take care of it
(and make any additional repairs of things that might go wrong, and
upgrade the firmware while they're at it).

But if not, then I'll just go with the Ritz plan.

I wonder what the cost of the repairs will be if I go with an
independant camera repair shop? If the costs of the repair end up
being close to the cost of the replacement of the camera, I'd
rather go ahead and get a new replacement to save on repair time
and worries of other malfunctions.

Well- I wasn't going to spend $166 to renew my Ritz warranty but after reading this thread, I sent in the check.

If my camera has issues and it takes 8 weeks to repair-well-I won't go crazy but I will insist on a 2 month extension of the warranty.

If that isn't the case-then let's just say my husband has garbage trucks in his business with darn big tires....

For 24 months of protection that is a whopping $320 worth of insurance from Ritz on a camera that cost $999. (Less today...) You are darn right they ought to give great service or a new camera!!! Pretty profitable unless there is a high incidence of repairs.

So I went over to the Torrance center, and explained that I'd really appreciate it if they could have the camera ready for my honeymoon (we leave for Jamaica on Fri), and they said that they could do it for me!

About the warranty, the lady said that the repair would be covered, so long as they don't find any water or sand damage...which there is none.

I'm really glad this happened today...now let's see if they can actually get it done.

Oh, and I asked the lady if she's ever encountered this type of problem on the D70, and she said that she never has. When I explained to her that I've read on the internet that this was somewhat of a common problem for early production models, she shook her head and said that people say a lot of untrue things on the internet.

At least they're going to help me out...

Call nikon and ask about the warranty...most manufacturers will honor the warranty up to 30 days out.

Your experience shows the benefits of dropping off in person. My camera and lens have been in the same service center for more than two weeks since they received them. Just today I called again, the only promise I got from the rep was that she will check with technicians and let me know the status by tomorrow. This, is already far better than the answer I got last Friday- nothing they could do except more wait. And my repair is supposed to be higher priority (highest as promised before I sent them in) because both were sent back for repairing the problems they caused in earlier repairs. Really incompetent...

Hope you have better luck.
