Few MTF member has asked me if I can make some open petition on dyxum.com regard future DNG support in 7D. Recently we saw that some manufacturers has provided such ability trough one firmware update so maybe KM can do the same.
Now, I asking you for your opinion if you find that petition of any sense.

To make that open petition representing I presume I will need to include some personal data of each 7D owners that will take part of it. It can be our full name, valid email address or even better serial number of 7D.
Any comments or suggestion is welcome.

Happy shooting

I presume DNG would be more viable for professiional or SERIOUS ametuers, but for the everyday man it may not be necssary, just my opinion...

I use DNG is mainly for archival purpose as it is likely to last longer than proprietary formats like MRW. There is little benefit to write DNG native (sure it saves one conversion step).

To me it is an issue of priority for KM. For example I would prefer a feature to specify the focal length for the AS when I use a manual lens and it cannot read the data from it. I am sure that this is not a widely asked feature but for me it would be of high importance.

My top priority for KM would be to make the 5400 series flashes compatible with the 7D or state that it is not possible in software.

As far as DNG, I bleieve that a BATCH MRW to DNG converter would be much more useful so that folk who do not have a 7D (e.g. Ax, Zx) can also benefit. I have not yet found such a program as freeware.

Adobe do a free one, you can drag files to it.

Is it just me ( or I'm missing something ) but the DNG files are almost half the size of the MRW files ? I just tested it and converted a 8,976 KB MRW into a 5,433 DNG. I selected comressed lossless option.

I converted a 219M MRW folder into a 132M DNG folder. To me DNG support would be fitting almost 2G worth of picture into a 1G card so yes in this case I'm very interested !!

I did not play much with DNG file but if in fact they are smaller and someone can confirm I'm not loosing any data on the conversion I will say wy not !

My 0.02$

I agree on the priority. I'd much rather have my 5400xi and 3500xi flashes work on the 7D than save a step in image file processing.

so I would like the dng format. In the long run this could result in fewer bugs and faster bugfixes in all the raw converters out there.

OT: My replacemant 7D is sitting on a shelf in the post office, I can almost see it thru my window. But I can't fetch it until tomorrow :-(

It's ridiculous, the amount of associated down times, that come with each new camera release, while various software, and hardware makers get on the same page. In the mean time, the consumer, and the professional are stuck trying to figure out the latest temporary fix, that will allow them to continue to wind their way through their workflow.

DNG is a great step in that direction, and hopefully the "800 lb. gorilla", that is 'Adobe', can make it happen. And get everyone on the same page.

'IS' will make your lens a better lens.
'VR' will make your lens a better lens.
'AS' will make you a better Photographer.

I would support a DNG support petition. Im all for standardisation, and if as they say it halves the file size that would definately be a big plus point. Not only would more data fit on a card, but it would also improve write times for RAW.

Not that I ever use raw mind you :)

Before Iview MediaPro 2.6.3 came i had to convert all my raw images to dng to see thumbnails. That's the practical proof why camera makers should standardise on one raw format. There's nothing wrong with mrw, but dng is more neutral for other camera makers and is likely to become a de-facto standard. And, dng files are smaller than mrw files, imagine shooting almost twice as much raw photos on your existing CF cards!!! Yummme :)
We would also gain some time with postprocessing.
