Pbase or Smugmug ??

I'd give a vote for Pbase only because I havent had a single
problem that the naysayers talk about. I've always been perfectly
able to access my account, I've had 3 broken links... which (duh)
are re-generate able with a button... and I dunno, 200 GB is like
1,000 pictures or so... I'm sorry, but if a photographer fills up
1000 shots on an online gallery, perhaps it's time to be a little
more selective with what goes up and what stays in storage...but
that's just me. I only put up my best stuff and even then some of
it is crapola... I paid 60 bucks for something like 600 megs of
space. But I can't say anything about smugsmug other than its name
is funny...to me smug means snobby... not sure what they're going
for or what it means but I'm sure someone will tell me lol... good
luck with whatever you choose.
..To me it is about Customer SERVICE...and PBase does not have that at all! Some people who are using PBase are diehards and will not leave PBase ever even if the service tanks. There are far too many complaints about PBase that really keeps me from signing up. I will never get how people allow themselves to put up with VERY POOR service or lack of communication from a company. PBase has a terrible record as far as communication and for that reason alone I advise everyone to Run!

Any other web site is far better.

Yes...it's been aggravating at times, but the rest of the time I
appreciate the ease of uploading zipped bunches of files, adding
and editing captions and gallery descriptions, switching image
order.

I find the search function by camera brands and listing of lenses
tremendously helpful, enjoying watching my favorites albums and
seeing when they've added something new.

I've using many picture storage sites and pBase is the BEST!

I'm hoping that Slug will get out of the student/rebellious
child/passive resistent non-communicative mindset and become more
professional. He should also get rid of the deadwood that haven't
paid for their accounts.

..I marvel at yours and other peoples patience with PBase. It boggles my mind since My background is PR and Customer Service. The biggest downfall of a company is poor products and or lack of customer service. PBase has poor service. No reason to stay with someone who does that. If everyone just left they would see how fast PBase either got their act together or vanished. Sorry, but when you pay money, no matter how SMALL the amount you expect little if any problems and you definatley should have a company that cares in keeping its users informed on why things are so bad.

DW I can't disagree with your statement, it's right on... for you. But again, I for whatever reason haven't experienced the problems others have spoken about. But I think what needs to be mentioned isnt how many people complain about it, but the ratio of dissatisfied to satisfied customers. Does anyone have any data on this? PBase services many many people.

Which one would you go for if you have to and why?
Fotki is great. The only advantage smugmug has in my book is
support for movies. I got a smugmug account ($100) for my pro
stuff, and was very disappointed; it's difficult for my customers
to order prints, because it gave them way too many options (like
color correction--why would I want my customers to color correct my
shots?).

Fotki is unique in having FTP uploading, which makes automating
uploads very easy; smugmug has a very small limit on the batch
upload size, which makes uploading 100 MB of photos WAY difficult.
perhaps you're not aware that one can upload unlimited amounts of photos at any time, using some of the software tools that have been written to smugmug's api. i know of one fellow who uploaded 100gigs at a single session. so, your info is a little out of date...
For as much as I paid for smugmug, I don't have enough bad things
to say about them.
sorry your experience hasn't been pleasant. have you written smugmug about this? if not, i'd suggest an email to [email protected] - detailing where you think the service falls short. they'll respond.

cheers

andy

Folks, it is not much help to state your preferred hosting service unless you give some reasons!

We been given have tons of compelling reasons for Smugmug on this thread, some for Pbase. There is no substitute for your experience with other services.

Thanks, Charlie

your kidding right ? Since 2 months , Pbase is very slow and even down sometimes.

How cant you noticed that ?

Your working for them ?

Just search this forum for "Pbase problem" for fun.

My url at the bottom points to my smugmug site. I've exchanged emails with them often with very fast and helpful responses. No complaints at all. I will admit their ordering process for prints is a little more cumbersome than it should be. But the prints themselves (from EZPrints in Atlanta) are very nice.

I'm bugging them about custom watermarks right now.

Thanks a lot for all your views. I was not able to login today as I was busy at work. Photography is my hobby and I don't use it as a profession. But one never knows. Just wanted to have a not so expensive but intuitive site offering good features where I can easily upload my photos and be done with it. I might not be posting 100Gig or so of images but still would host quite a bit. Print ordering feature appeals me :). I also want to have control of what photos are public and what are not.

This is a very valid point. We're currently working hard on simplifying it to two options:

For professional photographs, choose true color.

For consumer photographse, choose autoadjust.

Can't promise exactly the form it will take after it goes through user testing, but it will be far simpler.
Fotki is unique in having FTP uploading, which makes automating

Another very valid point. The 100 MB upload limits have frustrated a lot of our customers in the past.

The Mac uploader is unlimited and publishing an API has created lots to choice. Two of the most popular are:

http://wiki.shahine.com/default.aspx/MyWiki.SendToSmugMug
http://www.smugmugexplorer.com

They have consumer-friendly interfaces (on SendtoSmugmug, you just right-click a folder and away you go, no need for an ftp client). And they allow things like gallery creation & configuration.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Chris MacAskill

Smugmug for me. I have designs on selling my work in conjunction with a show a local gallery and smugmug allows custom pricing (and of course takes a cut). The interface is easy to use and everyone seems to really like layout.

mostly becasue the 100MB limit. It is hard for me to track which one has been uploaded and which have not. Also it really takes a long time to upload when you have to slip into many uploads. I hope the program you mentioned work. I will give them a try.
