I've been shooting my New Mk II and 580EX flash for a couple of weeks now (after years with Nikon). I have a pretty good feel for the quirks of the combo ie: -2/3 to -1/3 ev, for most shooting assignments. But on the whole I'm quite pleased.

However, last night while getting ready to shoot a photo reception line (same background just different subjects). I notice when one of the guests were wearing a light (white-tan)colored dress or suite. Exposure went a full stop under the present setting. So instead of letting the camera\flash do the work. I ended up doing the dialing to correct the exposure myself. First time I ever ran into this. Which got me thinking when could this problem arise again, aka: a bride in a white dress. I understand the mechanic of whats going on. Just wonder if any of you long time Canon users have a solution for me.

Thanks in advance.

This article addressed this issue to some degree I think. I read it this morning and I plan to try their approach when I get a chance.

They also mention something in the article about focusing with the * button. There was a PDF floating around on how to set up your camera to move focusing from the shutter button to * button on back. You don't need to do this to take advantage of what they aqre saying, but it will make it more convenient. They have a good explanation on this on how it might help.

Read the article and what I say will make more sense.

He has a E-TTL II system and depending on what lens, if it is sending distance data then he should not be getting that problem. This was a specific improvement in E-TTL II over the original E-TTL. The camera will use distance data to calculate a GN and use that for exposure rather than being fooled by the highly reflective material.

Thanks for you help gang. I'm afraid I'm at a dead end with this problem. A real bummer. Spoke to Canon Tech for some assistance. They tried; but gave me no working solution. Exposure problem is still there. The real kicker is that when I put my old Nikon SB-28 flash on Auto setting and fire away. Exposure is spot on. Unfortunatly 580EX Canon flash does'nt have that capability. With several weddings comming up this year. It looks like at this point I'll be using my MKII w\ a Nikon fllash for indoor shooting at least.
