We just bought a D70, wiped out my cash for a while. I just looked at the available HD space on my computer and only have 1.57GB free.

HELP!! Owning a D70, this is an emergency!!!!!

I own a Dell Inspiron 8000 Laptop, so I cant put in a new HD. "I" cant anyway.

So what should I do, external USB HD? I know these two words dont go together but..........Is there a descent one, cheap!

I believe that the 8000 has a 4pin firewire port. An external firewire drive will probably be your best bet.

You could also get a PCMCIA card for USB2.0 and do it that way, however the only advantage would be compatibility of the external drives with other computers that don't have firewire which would be easily overcome by choosing an external drive that has both firewire and USB2.0.

Something like the Maxtor OneTouch

I recently purchased an external hd and discovered that they are now coming out with a new version of firewire (faster). LaCie has triple compatable drives (usb2, firewire, and the new firewire). I picked up a 200 gig for $219 at B&H, but you can pick up smaller versions for less.

Another way of handling your hd problem is remove some of the material from the drive by transfering it to cds. I'll bet alot of your disk space is taken up by either music or photos. You can put 12 hours of mp3s on a single cd!

Good luck!

1) external 3.5 inch harddisk and then put it in a firewire or USB external case.
2) replace the existing one with a 80G notebook harddisk
3) Get a 2.5inch 80G harddisk with a small external case, or a OTG disk case.

4) Get yourself a DVD burner and backup all originals to DVDs. Leaving only the processed pictures and nice snaps on the PC.

I think option 4 is the most reliable and best long term solution. Moving parts die and data will be vulnerable. Option 2 + 4 is the optimal for you. I myself opt for 1 + 3 + 4 to balance portability and data security. My MP3 player is 40G and my OTG 40G disk both are serving as portable storage during shootings. The 3.5inch harddisk and DVDs are the permanent backup copies. But any one from the above will get you going for the moment.

Hope these help.

I went thru and deleted eveything I dont use anymore. And delted tons of bad pictures too. I'm up to 2.67MG of free space now

My HD is only 20GB to begin with.

I have 3 programs that I'm sure are HOGS...
Adobe CS
Microsoft Office
Macromedia Dreamweaver Suite, MX

I have NO music.

Probably have 200 pictures. I put pictures, adobe work etc on CDs.

I would love put in a new, larger HD, but I dont have a way to get my info from old HD to new HD. Thats why I thought external HD.

HMMMMMM.....I'm not sure what to do.

DOes it hurt an external HD to be unplugged and replugged? I wouldnt want it plugged in, unless I was moving pictures to it.

I look at a few HDs, but dont know what I'm looking at., dont know whats a good price etc.

Here are some links to deals I found (if you don't mind rebates)

External Drive:

External Drive Enclosure:

Hard Drive:

Go shop around on St. Patty's day. There's bound to be some good deals on internal hard drives. Less than 50 cents per GB is good and usually easily found. Be creative. Price match. Get rebate deals. Price match and THEN get the rebate to boot.

http://www.fatwallet.com is a good place to look.

For the hard drive option, you can either get an external drive (like in the first link) or you can get a regular internal hard drive and an external enclosure for it to make it external. The latter is often the cheapest route to go, but requires some rudimentary computer know-how. Get a hard drive that's 7200RPM, and hopefully a decent warranty (like 3 years). I personally have 4 hard drives with one that has been running for 5 years straight and another that has been running for 3 years straight. I've never killed a hard drive, but it happens. DVDs are more secure, but you could always buy two hard drives and have the same pictures on each, so if one dies you have a backup.

For the DVD burner option, I hear that the NEC ND-3520A is the best right now.

Sorry for the long post but hope this helps.

I suggest considering one of Lacie's P2 mobile HDDs. You can get a 80GB USB2 interface for about £90. These are very small and the only cable is a short USB which carries data and power. You plug it in, transfer, unplug. Very convenient and simple to use.

You will need a external harddrive sooner or later (Firewire/USB 2.0)..., however, I will suggest get another internal harddrive for your computer (80GB will be nice...) keep your 20GB and get a USB-OTG or PSD device without HDD....then, you will have a portable Storage Device.

Good luck!!

I have seen replacement drives for PCs that include a USB adaptor kit and some software that allows you to migrate the files to a larger disk drive. I suspect various computer repair places will do this for a fee.

Be sure to properly umount the drive before turning it off, to make sure the pictures have been completely written to the disk.

If you are going to be running the device all of the time, you want to make sure the unit has proper cooling (such as a fan) to remove heat from the drive. Many of the lower end units do not have cooling on the assumption the disk is only going to be used occasionally. On the other hand, turning on/off devices can shortend their lifetime, but for normal usage it probably isn't a problem.

Here's a link to a 40GB hitachi 2.5" drive for $70

You need some technical knowledge and confidence that you know what
you're doing, but "cloning" your 20GB HD to the 40GB (or larger) HD
is fairly straightforward and low in risk.

What you need:

a 3.5" to 2.5" interface cable adapter (if you don't have one or
can't borrow one, they're about $5)

a 2-drive 2.5" HD interface ribbon cable (2mm pitch, 44-pin instead
of 0.1" pitch 40-pin)

norton ghost on bootable CD

access to a "desktop" system

Steps:

Using the adapter and the cable, connect the two 2.5" to a desktop
system.

Boot to Norton Ghost

clone your 20GB disk to the new larger HD.

put the new large HD in your Dell laptop.

Put the desktop sytsem back together and buy its owner a nice
bottle of wine.

Enjoy the extra 20GB (or more) of disk space on your laptop.
