I am in serious trouble...Please Help!

I am not sure why you would make a decision that would cause your wife the one you want to be totally honest with to have such doubt in your decision making. If I were you I would return the lens get your money back and make a different decision....express to her your interest in buying a really expensive lens and tell her that's what you would like to save up and buy. Work it out .....never keep secrets that will damage your relationship.
I took the 70-200vr plunge today...thanks to the many post on this
board and especially the review by one tao.design. After rebate it
will come in just under my $1500 budget. The money is some I saved
up doing odd jobs.

My wife knows I have some money and I told her I was going to buy
"a nice lense" with it...and she's cool with that. Problem is, she
doesn't really know how much I have. Of course, I had to order the
lense with the charge card. When she sees a charge for a $1600
lense she is going to do you know what with a load of bricks.

Spending $1000 on a camera was quite a pill for my wife to swallow.
Spending $1500 (after rebate) on a lense for said camera is likely
to throw her into coronary arrest. She just isn't going to
understand.

Any suggestions on how to handle this situation would be greatly
appreciated.

Hello mate

If you saved the money by doing extra work - where's the problem??

Dude, its your hobby and it keeps you happy.

Maybe remind your missus that you COULD be spending money in
casino's or Gentlemen's relaxation bars instead ;o)

Good luck, and post some pics when you get chance of your lovely
new purchase!

but no offense taken. Stay cool.
Sorry but I don't know what I'd do in your shoes... I hope I'll
never need to know!

Good luck :)

...the 20-700vr is a pricey lense. But then again when she sees this beauty for what it is she may just marval that I could get it for ONLY $1500! Thanks for the advice.

Talk to her BEFORE you order the lens. And I don't mean five minutes before. You got to let her know how important photography is to you. My wife has known all my investments before I did them, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

I bet the thing that is most hard for your wife to take is not the money in itself, but the surprise. Don't keep her out of your dreams, then she'll not understand how important it is for you when you fulfil them!

Good luck! Hope you can work it out!

Be up front, tell her outright how much you earned and how much you
spent BEFORE she gets the statement. If she's like me, she will
definitely notice its absence, so interception is a bad idea.

Tell her how happy photography makes you and that this lens is the
BEST money can buy and you'll never need another in that focal
range, ever. ;)

Then buy her something pretty.

...To destinations where even a woman's scorn cannot reach. After a few years, it might be safe to return.

Otherwise, I would suggest practicing the old "groveling on your knees begging for forgivness" trick.

Maybe the FBI could be persuaded into giving you a new identity somewhere in another part of the country.

Or, perhaps, you could demonstrate to her how the lens would make a lovely vase to hold spring flowers when not in use.

As a last resort, you could tell her that this was the only only lens that was good enough for you because you wanted one that would bring you a similar feeling of the joy that you feel every day by having such a lovely and understanding woman as her to be your wife.

If that doesn't work...you're in deep doo-doo!!!

haha, I guess that's one of the perks of being a semi-pro or pro, honey, it's so I can buy you that (insert bag/jewelry/car) you've been eyeing. =P

Just shoot! =)

take pictures of himself for his wife and kids to remember HIM with? Afterall, she's gonna kill him and won't have much use for photos after he's dead.

Now, I'm not married, so I'm no expert. But honestly, I think you shouldn't wait until she sees the bill. You should let her know how much this lens costs.

With my parents, when my dad wants to buy an expensive toy, my mom usually gets to go out and splurge as well. Here's your chance to take her shopping and letting her buy all the stuff you'd usually tell her that she doesn't need. :)
Good Luck !
Also, taking nice pictures of her and your kids (if you have them)
should help as well.

Good luck!

Expressed to my girlfriend I would like to get a fast telezoom for my Nikons but that I wanted to save us some money. I told her I would get the next best one, a Sigma 70-200. She asked me how much. I said 800 Euro more or less. Next she asked how much the real Nikon would set me back. I said well, around 1500 Euro.

To which she replied: "If you spend that ridiculous amount of money on one stupid lens, you might as well go for the best one, or next week I hear you are not really satisfied with it and you walk around the house like a beaten Cocker Spaniel".

THAT's my kind of lady !

but you have more control...you see...well...you know...you can withhold certain maritial activities when he gets out of line. But you can also reward him with same activities to show appreciation when he "lets" you buy your lens.

For the husband that says, "Oh honey, let me have my lens and then I'll make love to you all night" isn't going to work as well.
Ahhh, but how to get this around the hubby? (see, it's not always
the woman who controls the $$!) He'll never 'get' it that a lens
can be more than the body itself.

So I see what the secret is... Just go ahead a take the plunge,
worry about the consequences later! Sounds like great advice to me
  • thanks!
