What features do you predict the best digital camera one can buy with, say, $3,000 have one year hence, i.e. July 2002?

6 MP? More?
Used version of currently existing high end model such as D1X?

Seth,

These models are new at the moment, and their predecessors existed in the market for two to three years. This means that they will most likely still be current one year from now and in the same price region.

So, I predict that the choices for $3000 will still be the Canon D30 and the original Nikon D1 (used). Fuji's S1 is a bit pale by comparison, due to the discontinued Nikon film body that it's based on. So, Fuji might have an updated model coming out within the next year that would most likely be in this price range.

The only true 6mp camera you're going to get for under $3k is an older Kodak 460 (1996 vintage). Even the now discontinued Kodak 660 units are still going to sell in the $4.5k to $5k range.

Of course, this only covers the offerings that fit into the Pro or Semi-Pro market (the ones with interchangable lenses). I am not going to try and speculate about what might go on in the consumer market, although I doubt that they going to be up to 6mp in one more year.

I think with the consumer level bodies getting more and more features and higher and higher resolutions sensors that it may help to spur the acceleration of development in the Pro line. By computing standards the number of new models for new digital cameras has been quite slow. I think we'll see this speed up as the consumer models get closer and closer.
