I have an opportunity to purchase this lens from a local camera technician. He is offering a 6 month warranty also. He has been in business for 20+ years and has a great reputation in this area, so I feel confident in his judgement. Question is, does anyone have any experience with this lens? What is the quality compaired to the newer 2 ring versions? I plan to use it with a D-70 and maybe my old N-80. Thanks.

Good condition, few scuff marks but optics are excellent, asking $375 US with Hoya skylight filter and 6 month mechanical warranty.

--That is good price but this lens don't have tripod collar and is big so it depends on way you make pics if tripod is your main way don't get one and look for newer version.Personaly I have use for 4 years 2 ring f2.8 and it was a task to hull around. After I get Nikon AF 70-210f4 constant I sold f2.8 and found that for me that lens was much better. Its only 62mm filter size and f4 is fast at what I need but best was that this lens focus very close in fact only 70-180 micro can get closer than any zoom in that range, it cost less than $250 mint like new and is only Nikon lens that don't use oil/lubricants for apareture mechanism so you never need to wory about liking oil blades.

hi t evatt-

that's a good price for that lens. i had one for several years and loved it. i especially liked the way i could grab the zoom/focus ring and spin the camera from horizontal to vertical without letting go of the lens.

it is big and heavy, but you get used to it. if you can't afford a newer version, i'd say go for it. make sure to take some test shots first and check that everything's ok.

Owned a one ringer 80-200 AFD ED/2.8 since 94.

Optically I never had any complaints - awesome images. Maybe 90% of he new 70-200 AFS/2.8 that I replaced it with.

build quality - thing was a tank

AF speed on a D70 - absolutely horrid. The main reason I sold my lens and got the 70-200/2.8 instead. It was "ok" to "almost good" on an N90S film body. Not sure it would be worth anythiing on a N80 body either to be honest, but I never owned an N80.

If you can deal with the pathetic AF speed on a D70 type body, you'll be very happy with the lens in terms of results. If you need AF performance, don't go down that road - you'll be sorry.

Optically, no matter what the pixel peepers might tell you, it's still a fine, fine lens that likely is better than the photographer behind the camera. Yea, the 70-200 is better, but it's not "blow away" better, image quality wise.

oh yea... for 375$, it might be worth the stretch if the glass is fiine and you don't need the AF speed. Given that the newer lenses are way more expensive.
