S410 vs S500 -- real world experience?

i just ordered the S500, after doing a lot of comparison research (i read the reviews, stared at the sample pics on imaging-resource.com for far too long) between it and the S410. i know the general consensus around here seems to be that the S410 gets the slight nod, but i'm wondering if there's anyone out there who's had real world experience with both and could chime in about them?

i chose the S500 over the S410 because of its superior continuous/burst mode and better flash performance. it seems that there is a slight noise difference between the two models but not a whole lot. any thoughts?

i guess i've got slightly cold feet about my choice is all...

thanks in advance (i know the topic is slightly dead-horsey)!

What is your basis for saying S500 has better flash performance? If it's just imaging-resource's review, I have checked the flash shots, and Dave used ISO 50 for S410 and ISO auto for S500. Naturally S500 boosted ISO for more distant flash shots to get good exposures, while S410 stuck at ISO 50 (as chosen by user) and got underexposed shots.

I'm willing to bet money that ISO auto was used for both cameras, flash results would be exactly the same.

Han, I ordered one for exactly the same reasons. It will be for my wife who complains about the weight of her G1. As far as the noise goes, if there is any difference it will easily be corrected with Noise Ninja. I perfer to do as much processing as possible outside the camera.

I use a 10D and always process it's RAW images, and the RAW images of the G1, in Photoshop so noise S500 reduction will be no problem. I do wish the S500 could shoot in RAW but I guess that will be in a future upgrade (hopefully using DNG format).

At almost half the price of the SD500, plus being able to use existing CF cards, it was an easy decision for me. My old G1 gives me wonderful images and with the S500 using the same size sensor I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Interesting -- yes, my entire basis for the difference in flash performance is imaging-resource's review (as i don't have either camera to do my own tests). i wonder why dave would use ISO auto for one and fix the other at ISO 50? that doesn't seem like an apples-to-apples comparison...

Most likely an oversight, or perhaps he thought that auto ISO with flash would behave just like without flash, i.e. always stay at ISO 50 noise levels - no matter what the lighting is.

Thanks for the feedback, Glenn. I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on it once you receive it!

Hi Mitch,

Are you also happy with the S500 in general? Any complaints?

-han
I don't know how important it is to you, but one of the main
reasons I went with the S500 was the VGA movie mode. I love it!
