Does Best Buy have any decent tripods/camera bags? My 350 XT(first ever DSLR for me) will be here on Wednesday and I want to get either a tripod or a camera bag for it. I have a best buy $50 gift card so I HAVE to buy something. Any suggestions?

many thanks!

They have Lowepro bags.

Camera bag, sure. Tripods - no. Unfortunately, there aren't any decent Tripods for $50.

Nothing that will turn your head and say wow.

Yes they do have some tripods on the shelp however I wasnt impressed with the selection. If your new to Tripods just head on over to WalMart and try out there $18 one :-)

I've been keeping on eye on the Carbon monopods personally. for Hiking/nature shots..

you know what you want. You will probably want another CF card at some point - and sometimes they have sales (otherwise their CF prices are too high). I would get a card when they have a sale or a large rebate.

Save the card - you'll get more out of it when you know what you want. Don't buy their tripods.

They do tend to carry smaller Lowerpro bags. The problem is they are fairly small - they don't carry any of the larger bags. So, if you don't plan on buying additional lenses/flashes in the next year then go ahead and look at the bags. However many SLR owners will tell you they ended up replacing their first camera bag within a year because they underestimated the amount of space they needed. So, my suggestion is to use the gift card on music and such - I wouldn't even buy CF cards as Best Buy around me doesn't seem to carry high speed cards.

As for the tripods - STAY CLEAR of cheap tripods unless you only see using it once or twice a year (for Christmas family portrait say) and only plan on using a very small lense. I had an old cheap tripod that I thought I could continue to use with my DRebel - until I bought a 70-200 lense. What a joke that turned out to be. For tripods I really suggest saving up and buying a decent set of legs/head (probably around $200) if you plan on using the tripod more than a couple times a year.

I'd buy neither of those at Best Buy. They have a pathetic selection of pan-head tripods which are mainly for video cameras. They carry Lowepro EX bags which serve as either video or photographic camera bags. Lame.

Try to find a local camera store that has a good selection of camera bags-- Tamrac, Lowepro, Domke, and see which one fits your needs and price range.

Search for a Calumet Camera store in your local area. I can't recall if even Ritz camera stores carry a good selection of bags.

If there's no expiration on the gift card, save it for something computer related-- dvd media for backup, hard drives on sale for extra storage, CF cards, etc.

You can't use your BBuy Gift Card on this, but I bought a Kenlock 3000 Tripod off of Ebay and have found it to be extremely solid. I like it a lot.

My 350D will be here in a day or so along with my 70-210 lens, so that will be a good test for it, but my neighbor has a D70 and used my tripod and it did a great job for him.

Here's one on Ebay right now, $22 shipped:

I wish I could compare it against some of the more expensive tripods that people talk about on here to know how it stacks up, but so far I'm really happy with it and I have no plans of buying a more expensive one at this point. I know I can replace the head with a Bogen, if I ever feel the desire. This one has retractable feed to expose spikes, an upside down camera thread at the bottom of the pole, and the tripod platform will tilt upright to 90-degrees for portrait shots.

My friend that had the D70 got his for $23 from someone. I was lucky and only paid $13 shipped for mine. ;)

I work at BB (yeah I know we're not the best but it's ajob)

A whopping selection of 3 sunpak tripods. Not up to the standards of people here but in my view even an inexpensive tripod is WORLDS better than none at all and if you're not using it all the time could still be worthwhile.

In the past we've had the canon backpack (smallish one, I dunno the model number or if they still carry it) and right now we have the "canon gadget bag" which is $60 and could hold a couple of bodies, few lenses and a couple of flashes without too much trouble; it's pretty large. We also have the samller lowepro bags but those probably won't cut it.

The LowePro bags sold at Best Buy are good. I bought a small top loader bag once. Unfortunately this bag didn't have mount points on the outside for auxilary pouches. But for just carrying my DSLR with a small lens, it does the job fine.

As for tripod bags, I suggest taking a look at Ritz and Wolf Camera. I don't recommend buying a tripod at best buy. Cheap tripods aren't worth it. They wobble so much, you are better off hand holding the camera or getting one of those small table top tripods, like the Ultrapod II.

Today I just got a lowepro 200 Reporter Lite from eBags for $34.99 shipped.

It looks great and looks plenty big for my 350D + 18-55mm + 50mm + 70-210mm USM + ??? I'll know for sure tomorrow when I get the camera and lenses. But it looks great. And, the lifetime warranty is a nice bonus. I'm really impressed with how sturdy the bag is without anything in it. I thought it was filled with cardboard when I got it, but it's just the stiff foam insert. Nice stuff.

Mike:

This looks like an appealing bag for me -- I'm a beginner and about to buy a 350D with a few lenses.. i wonder how padded this is and whether it's the "perfect" bag for general use?

I'm not a bag expert, and I didn't go to a camera shop comparing all the bags side-by-side, but I can't imagine needing any more padding than what this has to offer. (except where noted below) I think the padding is more than adequate. One of the benefits of this bag is that it has a zipper on top that you can open up and have direct access to your gear, without opening up the big flap. Quick access to me was key. HOWEVER, because there is quick access on top, there is no padding on top, just the water resistant cover. That's the one thing you'll have to remember when you pack, that you can't put heavy stuff on top of it, but who would ever do that anyway??? Overall, for $35 I think this is as perfect of a bag as I need.

I went the other way - I bought a hugh bag that carried everything. So I carried everything - and only used a few pieces regularly. So I went to a small Tenba bag that holds body, flash and 2 lenses at most. A lot less weight and I don't miss what I don't carry.

I have a Pelican case for travel, and put the small bag in my checked luggage so I have it at my destination. Buy a good bag - my Tenba's still going strong after 20 years.

There's always a risk involved with buying something like this without actually seeing it in person :)

I bought my Lowepro microtrekker AW100 from them and it has been a great bag. I haven’t looked at their tripods so I can’t comment on that. I think they have the same memory, batteries… that most places sell. For me the PSP that they sell was a very useful accessory. With it I feel free to use the camera as much as I like and don’t worry about bad shutters and the like since it covers normal wear and tear.

Mike, let us know when you get the bag and whether it'll fit all your gear. You have approx the same amount of gear I will have to put in it.

In "What Digital Camera" March edition they are reviewing 8 tripods and the Jessops TP323 seems a good buy receiving 81% at £40RRP. Incidentally, the £250 tripods was only given 90%.

I got everything yesterday afternoon. It holds everything with room to spare...Sorry for my delayed response...I have been playing with the camear...Here's a pic I just took. I have the camera lying on it's side with the kit lens pointing towards the back of the bag (top of the picture)...

There's plenty of room where the charger is sitting to hold a good sized flash, I would think. And, I'm sure I'm not optimizing space, but I don't need to.

In front of the padded interior, there's a pocket on the inside of the exterior bag where I have two camel hair brushes. On the "outside" of the exterior bag just below the wording for the 350D, there's a pocket that has the USB and TV cable. In front of that there's another pocket where I put the owner's manual. There are other pockets in front, too, and another hidden one in the back.

It's really the perfect size for my needs, and like I said, a GREAT price for something of this quality.

We sell the Lowepro Micro Trekker 100, which is a great starter backpack, I used to own one, and I put it through some abuse. Along with that it can hold quite a bit of gear.

We also sell the Rezo 140 AW. It is not all that big of a bag, but it will hold your camera, and a lens or two, and keep them dry considering it is an all weather bag.

I would go with the Micro Trekker. It is just bigger and can withstand most of what you could throw at it.
