Been trying to get a dragonfly for ages, but they're all very timid around here. This guy however let me approach to a foot or so.

Settings were: 1/500, F/4, iso 80, auto WB.

Have cropped and halved the size. Automatic contrast adjustment done in PSP7, and saved as 36% compression jpeg.

Hi Seb
Great shot, but I see the sun isn't shining in your neck of the woods either.
:-)

kind regards

Have you decided that from the shutter speed and aperture or what Jono?

It was sunny, as you can see by the shadows on the plant. But it wasn't very sunny, quite a bit of cloud around today.

Seb,

Enjoyed the shot! You are right, dragon flies tend to keep moving. I've been on vacation this last week, and have tried without any success to get a good shot of one. I got close a couple of times, but the sound or sight of removing the lens cover had them on the move each time. I guess that somewhere in the evolution of the critters, they had to escape from round 62mm predators.

The other thing is you don't really notice them until you're looking for them. There was one that must've been 5-6" long! Never seen anything like it before! But he wouldn't even settle at a distance, just flew around a bit and then buggered off.

Here are a couple of my fly pictures taken this weekend. Both taken with the standard lens. They look best a full resolution. Check the album for the resized 800x600 images.

How did you get it to smile like that? It does appear to smiling, right?

Simple. Catch the little critter, put him in the freezer for a few hours. Then he's SO slow you can arrange his face and legs as you like....

I am of course kidding (honest!) It DOES appear to be smiling though. Or maybe it's snarling, trying to scare me off..

Nice picture Seb.

Here's one to prove that bumblebees can fly, even when laden with pollen :) This is a Scottish bee, approaching a hosta. Taken with the standard lens.

Hi,

You lot have far more patience than me! Ankle biters are the nearest thing I get to shooting that small!

See ya,

Richard
