Who's waiting for iMac G5 version 2 ?

Maybe they will just fix the defective noisy CPU fan.
I've read several threads in other forums abou this, let's hope they have it fixed already :)
As far as special software for the iMac; forget it. All it needs
to be is for OSX and do what you want it to do.
Yes that's what I mean't, I'm just using the name iMac for my new system, for which I need the new software. I've found a bunch of nice apps already, they sure look goog on the online screenshots, now let's hope they perform as well as they look.
I am through with waiting for the "next upgrade" because there will
always be a next upgrade and I have better things to do than wait
for what MIGHT be an improvement. think of what you could be doing
RIGHT NOW if you don't wait. Let the bleeding edge techno-geeks
wait there life away!
Well I have to save up for an extra month and a half, so I'm hoping they have made the revision by than, otherwise I'm not sue what I'd do...

Cheers,

I'd like to see a 9G DVD burner.
Hi folks,

right now I'm still saving every spare euro I can, in order to buy
a 20 inch iMac G5. During this period I'm doing research into which
software is best for my iMac and what accessories I'm going to buy
with it, a lot of good idea's come from this forum right here.

However, in my searches, I've learnt that many prospective buyers
are waiting for the iMac 'Revision B'. The supposedly soon (?) to
be released update of the current iMac G5. Since I'm still saving
up in order to buy, I might as well wait for that revision myself.

I was wondering just how many people on this forum were waiting on
this update, and what they were expecting or even what they are
hoping (against all hope?) for in this revision.

Personally I wouldn't mind a faster G5 processor. I hope a 2.5 GHz
but that's probably out of the question, right?

Please contribute in this thread, your most accurate prediction and
if you want maybe your most wild prediction too :)

Cheers,

I would think the method they would employ, would be based on the XServe approach which has huge vents on the front that such air through the unit. The problem is that, unlike the XServe, most people use their iMac in a warmer more humid environment. I recently upgraded a G4 to dual 1.4 processors and am having huge cooling problems because my office is almost always 75-80F and so the air passing through the case is almost as warm as inside the case.

In the end I was forced to open the side of the case and use convection since the processor is located on the door of the G4 (formerly 466)!

Agree about the upgrades that people have suggested but (coming from G4/FP iMac) the G5 is just fan-dobi-dozi! 20" screen is luxury and performance is first class.

Agree that Apple should include as standard...
Bluetooth
512MB RAM
Airport
Faster SuperDrive

Enjoy whatever your decision.

I am hating having to fork out for iLife 05 (missed upgrade entitlement by 2 weeks) and Tiger. But both are likely to be worth it.

Do you mean a higher capacity DVD burner, 9G in 9Gb?
I didn't know they had those but it sounds like a reasonable update to me :)

Hi Sander,

For Photoshop and other picture editing tools it is suggested to use 2 hard disks in a system. One for the application and one for storing the pictures (store the temporally image file). This is to increase the overall speed of the system.

Since the iMac can only use one hard disk, a Firewire external hard disk would be nice for a very intensive photo editing session. Now a Firewire 800 connection has almost the same speed then an internal hard drive. The Firewire 400 connection will be also speedy (better then USB 2.0) but it is 50% slower transferring data across.

I'm sure the new iMac will have Firewire 800. The latest Powerbooks have them already.

I hope this explanation helps.

Jan
your extra memory slot is a very good suggestion.
However I'm wondering what the firewire 800 would be for, an
external HD I assume, would it benefit from the 400 to 800 step?
(just asking i have no clue)
-improved iPhoto 6.0.
which features would you like to see improved?

Cheers,

Thanks for you contribution,

your iLife5/Tiger remark hits home too, I'd be very pleased when the new revision came with this pre-installed.

I think even your 'expected' is a bit optimistic (graphics card and FW800). Hope I'm wrong though.

Hi Nico,

yes I too have my reservations on some of the expected upgrades, but these are the pretty balanced results of the combined expectations in this thread. I guess it's very easy for us to be too optimistic in our wishes, the truth will be a dissapointment in that case. The same happened with people expecting a G5 PowerBook.

Let's keep our fingers crossed just in case :)

Just got my imac 20" yesterday. It seems fine, though definitely not as fast as my dual processor G4. That said, I haven't gotten my ram modules yet and surely hope they bring it up to speed, because as it is, it is definitely not a ground breaker.

Hmm, well that is surely subjective. I have one in front of me here and it is a gorgeous animal, as far as I'm concerned. I've always thought the "ilamp" was an atrocious thing. Personally, I think the original imc, ours was the ruby one, was the best looking computer every built.

I'm waiting too:

I would like to see in the new iMac:
-More standard RAM memory.
-More memory slots.
-Better graphic card. (for my kids)
-Firewire 800.

-I would like to see Tiger OS screaming in 64bit.
-Spotlight (new way of working with information).
-improved iPhoto 6.0.
I would say additional memory slots are unlikely because that would mean a different logic board. Not really any need for a better video card. Firewire 800 is a logical upgrade. In fact I imagine they reserved that just for an upgrade. I would think a slight processor speed upgrade would be logical. If you go back to the last imac, you realize they did primarily three upgrades: the 17" display, a speed bump to 1gig hz, and the 20" display. The life span of that machine was three years. The original imac was a total industry and electronics industry trend setter. They went through a whole bunch of upgrades with it, but the color changes were probably the most significant. I doubt you'll see anything anywhere near that obvious with the current model. I just got one and it is very attractive, though not all that fast.

Double layer (DL) burners. I think Sony makes one. They actually hold about 8.5 gigs.

I received my iMac yesterday afternoon via FedEx. Before I even powered it up I took off the back and installed 2x512MB DIMMs and the Airport Extreme card that I ordered from other sources. The RAM was Kingston for the Mac, not generic PC3200 DIMMs.

So far so good. It's very quiet and I've just been moving over personal files and stuff via a 160GB firewire external drive from my XP box. The display is to die for. Next to my Dell 17" flat LCD panel, it looks awesome. As soon as I get Nikon capture and Photoshop installed, I'll do some A/B comparisons against my old 1.8GHz P4 with IDE and 512MB RAM.

So far I'm a happy camper!

Scott,

I'm looking forward for your speed results of Nikon Capture (use the latest release of this week version 4.2.1, it should improve the speed for the Mac now).

Just a question: how did you organise your external drive , to transfer data from your PC to the Mac (partitioned?). Since OSX/ WINXP only supports FAT32 as a common format, are you limited with a 32GB/partition size, correct?
